Bullets With Cannelure | Without Cannelure

A cannelure is there so you can crimp the case mouth into the jacket thereby creating a mechanical lock which helps with ignition and bullet setback. Unfortunately a cannelure harms accuracy and that is why match bullets don’t have cannelures.

When you crimp too much a cannelure gives a bit of a buffer space to avoid upsetting the lead within the copper jacket.
Thats it.

The cannelure itself can “upset” the lead.

As others have stated, a cannelure with a crimp can degrade the accuracy of a match-grade bullet.

The military insisted that the 77 grain Sierra MatchKing loaded in MK262 Mod 1 have a cannelure. Sierra reluctantly complied with a shallow cannelure.
