I am in the market for a new scope to mount on my POF P-308. I have been looking at a Burris 1.5x-6x40mm Xtreme Tactical XTR Ballistic 7.62 Illum Scope. Never owned one before and am wondering what the level of quality it has in relationship to the cost. This is my pig gun so i need the low light capability that the 40mm offers. Not going to do much shooting beyond 300 yards but you never know. I am open to any suggestions, but price needs to be in or around what they are asking for the Burris...

I had one of thos Burris scopes for a while, but the POI would shift about 2" when changing power from 1.5 to 6. That was one of 3 Burris scopes that I had problems with. I just can't give them any more of my money. There are others with the exact opposite opinion, but now you have mine.

I've owned Burris scopes all my life and have never had a POI shift at different magnifications or any other issues. If you do have an issue, I know they have an excellent lifetime warranty. I have a Burris scope on my 3-gun carbine and most of my hunting rifles. I shot a Steiner (made in the same plant) scope on my competition rig all last year with zero issues. Burris scopes are great for the money and the XTR line is top notch! If you want to save some money, there is a 1.5-6 MTAC now (non-illuminated). I understand illumination will be added to the entire MTAC line next year. Good Luck.

I was just wondering if the reticle being set up for the 7.62 could still work with the 5.56 round. I"m in the market for a new low power scope for my 5.56 ar and liked this scope other then it being set up for the 7.62 round.

As far as I know, the reticle does not stop the bullets from exiting the bore.

Why woukd it not "work"?

No matter what cartridge or load you are shooting, you still need to map the reticle and your loads.

308 and 223 have surprising similar drops at hunting distances. If you need to fine tune it, you can get the exact distances between the stadia lines and calculate your own distances for the stadia lines. They might not be exactly 200, 300, 400 , etc, but close. PM me if you need help.

I think for the MTAC, Burris has "maps" for both 7.62 and 223. I would be surprised if they didn't have the same for the XTR, but even with my 1-4 MTAC, I recalculated the reticle for my bullet and my velocity at a couple of density altitudes.

Burris has the info on their XTR Reticle. : http://www.burrisoptics.com/scopespecs1.html
