Yeah, I'm that guy today.

Burris XTR rings have a FRONT and a BACK. If you put the rings on backward, don't be surprised if your tack driving sniper rifle starts grouping like a shotgun. For those that don't know, look at the locking screw on the under side of the rings and mate the flat side milled into the screw with the flat of the picatinny rail. Square peg goes into square hole. This can save you a lot of heart-ache, and wasted ammo, on the range.

Ouch, glad you figured that out. Unlike you, I lucked out with my ignorance at putting them on right. Then one day while swapping scopes around I noticed, "Hey that thing has a flat on it like my warnes..."

Haha well at least you figured it out! I didn't notice until I took some off of a rifle one day. One of the rare times I did something unknowingly without f'ing it up.

I think you will find that it doesn't matter which way you install the rings. Cutting the flat in an effort to get a "proper cross-bolt interface" is waste of time. I looked at this back when I was making my Gen 1 rings and found that it didn't make a difference. A cross bolt with a round cross section works fine in the recoil slot even when used on a powerful rifle and a heavy scope. Just make sure that you push the scope forward when tightening the rail clamp screws.

I use two recoil lugs on my rings but only because I need them both to accommodate the rail clamp screws. In order to maximize the force imparted by the rail clamp screws upon the rail, and therefore maximize the clamping force, the rail clamp screws should be as low as possible making the recoil lugs a convenient place to put them. I rely on just one lug to bear the recoil loads. The other is there for the other screw.
