so i'll be buying my first piece of glass with my tax return this year and these are my choices unless i find a good deal on a used scope. reason why i'm trying to choose between these 2 is i have a friend with a wholesale account and i'll get them at cost. my budget is $1000 but i can get either of these for under $800.

so which would you get? personally i'm leaning towards the bushnell because of the illuminated reticle and it's more of a known brand for me(had a few binoculars that were bushnell in the past). i've never had any dealings with weaver so it's a big unknown

Re: bushnell tactical vs weaver tactical

Thank god. I have been literally waiting for this thread to surface. I'm there too, buddy. Should be a good one. The 34mm tube on the bushnell has my eye.

Re: bushnell tactical vs weaver tactical

Weaver makes a good quality product. You won't be disappointed if you go weaver. There's a lot on this site about the weaver tactical line already so if you haven't, I would read those threads.

Re: bushnell tactical vs weaver tactical

The new bushnell 3.5-21x50 elite tactical is just like the old one but with illuminated reticle, correct?

Re: bushnell tactical vs weaver tactical

The bushnell uses a standard mildot reticle, while the Weaver tactical, at least the 3-15x version, comes with the EMDR, which is better. All things equal, I would get the Weaver due to its reticle, and I believe its cheaper than the ffp Bushnell tactical.

Re: bushnell tactical vs weaver tactical

Are you talking the Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-12/6-24, or the Bushnell Elite HDMR 3.5-12x50? Big difference between the two types of scopes...

I have an Elite 4200 6-24x50, and while I have nothing 'better' to compare it to I'm very happy with it (though it is elevation limited with only 13.0mil).

In the original (huge) Weaver 3-15x thread one poster said he compared it with his friend's Elite 4200 Tactical 6-24x and the Weaver had better glass...though that is kind of subjective.

SWFA has the Weaver Tactical 3-15x50 FFP EMDR for $699, all day every day; this is $100-150 less than the Elite Tactical 3-12x44. Of course some folks don't like the Weaver's pop up/down knobs.

Buy both and return the one you don't like???

Bushnell will have some new modern mill type reticles coming out soon for 2012 and I believe the new ones have about 5 mils more elevation travel than the first gen.

The HDMR 3.5-21x50 is a couple steps up in quality but does not have illume.

I've read good and bad things about the Weaver. Recently I read about 2 of them going down at the same match in another thread here on the Hide. I also remember reading about some problems with their 4-20.

this is the first i have heard of this, concerning weaver. what did you mean by "go down"?

Re: bushnell tactical vs weaver tactical

If it helps, the Bushnell scopes come with their "Bullet Proof Warranty." Try the scope for a year and if you find something you like better or are not happy with the Bushnell for whatever reason, send it back with your receipt and they'll refund your purchase price. Hard to beat that.

Charlie

(as a side note, I'm waiting on delivery of the Weaver 3-15x50 EMDR)

Re: bushnell tactical vs weaver tactical

ok probably a stupid question but i have a 03a3 action and the scope mounts are drilled crooked. i have an ancient leupold mounted on it now and the guy i got the gun from said he put some shims in the rings to line the scope up with the barrel.

so is it possible to redrill the mounts so they're straight?

They quit working. I don't know any details? I tried to find the thread yesterday but couldn't.
