Trying to decide between the new Bushnell Trophy XLT or Nikon Prostaff to go on a hunting rifle for a Christmas Gift for my father. Scope will be the 3x9x40 with DOA or BDC. My father only hunts about 4 times a year with me, so I don't think a high end scope is necessary. He's always used my rifles, so I want to get him his own. I know this is sort of backwards LOL usualy the father is looking to get his son a rifle lol, he's not a big hunter. Anyone use these, or have another $130 recommendation. I have to stay in this budget.

Prostaff is a decent scope for the money. I've been using one for a few years as my "beater" scope that I flop around to various rifles and its always held zero.

Neither. For not much more you can get one of the 2-7 Vortex Vipers on clearance that's a ton better scope. Not only is it a lot better glass, you get a lot better warranty too. They run $170 right now at SWFA.

That being said, when the Vipers aren't on clearance, I think the Burris FFII and the Vortex Diamondback are much better scopes than the Trophy or the Prostaff, and they are only slightly more. It's not that a Prostaff is a bad scope because it's not, but glass wise it's not up to par with the FFII or Diamondback, but the price is pretty close especially if you look for the FFII on eBay. If you absolutely can't spend a dime over the Prostaff it's not a horrible choice. I have one, and it has really crappy turrets that you have to adjust with a screw driver or coin, and even then I don't like them, and the glass while not horrible is not anywhere near the quality of the FFII I have. That being said, the glass is decent, and the scope seems to hold up and work pretty well.

I highly doubt that Diamondback has a better glass than Nikon. Vipers, perhaps.

Anyways, to stay on topic, no doubt get a Nikon rather than Bushy. Bushnell's CS is horrible God forbid you'll need it...

The Diamondback does in fact have better glass than the Nikon Prostaff. Perhaps you are getting the Diamondback confused with their cheaper Crossfire. There is a great writeup on Optics Talk comparing several scopes in that price range. The Nikon came in at the bottom. That being said, I also bought one to test it on my own and I got pretty much the same results. I didn't have a Diamondback to compare it to, but I did have a Burris FFII and the FFII optically was quite a bit better. The Prostaff was better than the Leupold VX-I I tested though

Re: Bushnell Trophy XLT or Nikon Prostaf

Here is a $70 scope that will exceed the glass in the trophy or Prostaff scope. Don't let the $70 price mislead you, same scope in Weaver 40/44 line sells for $216 at Optics Planet. It is a discontinued Brand/scope owned by ATK that also owns Weaver. Warranty on it is handled by Weaver since they have the same scopes. It is the Federal Intensity 2.8-10x44 aspherical lens scope made in Philippines in same factory that once made the older AETEC scopes that also used the aspherical lens system....which will give you a darn bright/clear scope. I ended up buying a vortex viper 2x7x32 bdc at the closeout price. It was a heck of a deal I couldn't pass up. Not much difference from 9x to 7x, especially for big game hunting.
Thanks for the suggestion.
