Buy once, cry once... TRG-22 or AI AW in .308?

I am going to buy a new rifle. Have narrowed it down to two- a Sako TRG-22 or an AI AW. The AW runs about 2k more, and I haven't read a lot of downsides about the TRG, both seem pretty solid, with the edge in ruggedness going to the AW. I would rather spend the extra now and get one if it is really that much better, than wish I did it later on. That being said, for the difference in money (close to $2500,) I could come pretty close to getting the S&B PMII I want.

I know the Trg has expensive accessories, like $600 for a bipod, $200 for a brake and $250 or so for extra mags. The AI accessories aren't free either though, with $300-350 for a bipod (Atlas w/spigot or factory,) so the accessories cost doesn't chew up the difference as fast as you would think.

I know this topic has been posted before, so I am sorry for the duplication, however, I feel I should bring this up before I drop the coin.

For the record, I am not going to be driving either of these to their potential. I am just starting out. However, I feel better putting thousands of dollars of ammo downrange with the confidence of knowing that when I miss, it is me, and not the gun. After reading the "Practical Long Range Shooting" article linked here: http://demigodllc.com/articles/practical-long-range-rifle-shooting-equipment/?p=1 , that this is the right choice for me.

Lets discuss! Is the AI worth that much more?

If I were to do it all over again and was going to only own 1 rifle (and I wanted a factory rifle) then I would likely get an AIAE MkII. I'm convinced for the money it's about the best factory gun going and then you could afford that S&B (or I'd suggest Hensoldt

).

I know there are TRG lovers here, but I can't get over the prices they charge for their accessories.

Oh, and for the AI, I'd get the 20" 308 barrel. Then after some trigger time I'd get a 243 barrel for it at 26" that you could use for tactical comps and varminting. Once you've got the $150 in tools you can swap barrels yourself in about 15 minutes tops.

Its $450 for the bipod $175 for mags, $200 for the bipod. So it isn't all that bad comparatively. Also the expense for the TRG-22 is a bit less then you see on sites!
$2950 is the price I'm paying for a Tan 20" TRG-22 and the 26" barreled rifles are cheaper as are the other models if I'm correct. I would call up Euro Optics and talk to Alex or email him.

Jer has a Tan 20" TRG-22 in the for sale section which is new in box from my understanding. I would try to deal with him on that if your looking for a Tan 20" TRG-22 since Alex told me I bought the last Tan 20" one they had in stock.

I have the AE MKII in .308, fixed stock, 20" barrel and have been satisfied with it so far. Choose an appropriate piece of glass and call it a day. With the amount of money you can save between the AW and AE you can buy a pile of quality ammuntion. However, that's not saying anything negative against the TRG. They're fine rifles in their own respect.

I knew there would be a lot of suggestions for the AE in this thread, and it is a logical choice. I have a hard time taking the "second best" option in any given line, however.

I'll never drive either to its capability, so it is absolutely nothing against the AE itself. But I could have bought a 330ci sport package and saved a LOT of money, but I bought an M3, and am so glad I did. It's just the kind of guy I am. I like having and using nice things.

I have used a TRG for a few rounds, and really liked it. I doubt I'd get a chance to use an AW or AE being in Maine, so I kind of have to make a decision without too much hands on.

As far as a price on a TRG, my local dealer, who I have a good relationship with, quoted me $2950 for a tan 20" TRG with a pic rail, I don't think I'd do much better online after transfer fees and shipping, plus I wouldn't want to cut his balls for a couple of bucks.

Oh and on the AE MK2, it seems like if I take the folding stock (which I'd want,) and the brake, I'm over $4g and not that far off from the AW at that point (which has the folding stock standard, yes? What about the brake?)

You'd still be very far from an AW. And you don't need an AW. You don't really need the folding stock, either, except to get the bolt out without taking the cheek piece off. And you don't need a muzzle brake on a .308. Get the AE, and there's nothing wrong with the fixed stock 24" barrel version.

Let me sum it up for you on the AE vs AW debate.

If you have the money to buy the AW and the S&B scope then do it, more power to you, I buy lots of stuff I never run to its full potential. However, the original post made it sound like if you bought the less expensive rifle then you could also afford the S&B. So, if you can't afford the AW and the S&B then get the AE and the S&B.

You'd be a fool to buy an AW and put a $600 scope on it because that was all that was in the budget.

Also, I'm guessing you don't reload, so in your initial gun budget you should also include at least $600 for a case of decent 308 ammo. Again, don't blow your wad on the rifle and then expect it to shoot well with crap ammo and a cheap scope.

Don't forget sales tax. Buying local will generally cost you $150-$200 in sales tax on a $3k purchase. Most places charge $25 +/-$5 for a transfer and shipping runs about the same so you could potentially save a hundred bucks or more buying the same rifle for the same price online. Just trying to give a heads up in your decision making process.

This would be the way to go over the AIAW. The difference in price would purchase alot of ammo. Only question being is do they (AIAE Mk II) headspace as well as the AIAW?

I agree but I was wondering about that issue as well. I don't think the MKII's have the same tolerances as the AW. But I seem to recall a post/statement from GAP that about 5% of AW's don't headspace as well as the others anyway... ???

If you have the cash go with the AI (either the AE or AW, both will be better than a TRG IMHO) I've owned a Sako TRG and though it was very accurate, I would have traded it for either AI's in a heartbeat! One thing I couldn't stand about my TRG was that to take it apart you needed about 4 different sizes of hex keys and a FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER .......wth? Don't know who came up with that concept but poor design in my opinion.

I also could just not get that comfortable shooting with the TRG. One other thing about the TRG, by the time you buy it, spend the money on the bi-pod, scope mount, muzzle break, ect you could have just bought the AIAW anyway.

Either of the AI's will be much tougher than the Sako.

The bolts between an AE and AW interchange, you can freely use one in the other and Vice Versa. As well you can take an AW barrel off and use it on an AE, the systems while different are very similar.

The biggest difference, the bonding of the AW action to the chassis versus the ability to remove the AE action from the chassis is what leads to the confusion of changing barrels out. However it is essentially the same, changing an AE barrel is just as simple a process.

To clarify, a S&B (or Hensoldt, or USO) is in the future for this gun anyhow. It just might have to wait a bit if I am dropping the extra coin on the gun. I won't compromise on ammo either.

While mostly true this is not a universal statement that applies to everyone. I know a few people who HATE the AI stock. So there's nothing negative to say about the rifles so much as personal preference. Lots of people love them but some people don't like them and those who don't seem to REALLY not like them. I wouldn't recommend buying one simply based on what is said online. Lay behind one and make sure it works for you before ordering/buying one.

That's funny because I happen to think the TRG has a much more aesthetically appealing stock as compared to the AI. This is more matter of opinion but even most AI shooters I know think the TRG stock looks better than the AI. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though.

If you have that kind of coin for a rifle that you are still learning to shoot, then you might as well add another $2-5K on 3-5 weeks of schools.

And if you want to get really good results, then fork over the time and money for the reloading gear.

If you are having to save to buy this, then the cost savings of the AE gives you the flexibility to start earlier with a better foundation.

Go for the AW. I have two custom 308s and then I bought a left hand AW and I wish I would have started there. As you said"buy once, cry once". There is something about a $7,000 rifle that feels good. Make sure to order it with the magnum break.

I shoot the TRG and it is superb.

Had I bought an AI... I would probably say the same thing about it.

The important thing here is that you have picked two of the best rifles on the planet. You cannot go wrong with either.

Same true of scope. I shoot USO. They are superb. S&B is also superb.

We can all promote our 'favorites' but the important thing here is that you choose the combination you like, knowing that any combination of Sako, AI, USO and S&B will be world class.

My suggestion would be to get the S&B 5-25x56 scope as then you have just about the best of the best and never have to upgrade. A great scope like that will make a world of difference compared to cheaper ones. If you want to do close range, get the P4 if you want to stretch out to 1000 yards the P4F has thinner lines so they don't block the center of the target. New they tend to be close to 3k and used they are around $2500 or so.

Then if you have the money get the AI 308 AW rifle with the folding stock, new or used depending on the deal you find.

If you don't have the money for the AW model, the AE Mark II model will do very well & be just as accurate.

I'd recommend getting the folding stock option on either one, it makes cleaning easier (quicker to pull out the bolt all the way) and it will make it sell a lot faster). I'd recommend getting the threaded barrel with the brake on it if you can, it gives you more options to have a brake or not, or to have a suppressor andn also helps in resale value. On the AE ones, with the folding stocks, you can get new around $3600 and used around $3000

I actually started out with a TRG in the .338 with a Leupold scope and I was very happy when I sold that to fund a AW/S&B combo.

For an AE combo, brand new you would be around $6600 and then for a used one you would probably be around the $5500 range.

On the for sale section you can sometimes find a used combo of the rifle & the S&B scope for a good price. If I recall correctly someone had a AW & an S&B listed for $7500 not too long ago.

I say less then. The AI and Sakos are purpose built rifles. With a custom, for the most part you are taking a hunting rifle or variant there of and adapting it into a tactical build (see what fails more the Rem 700 or AI thread). The beauty of a custom, is that it's a custom, you are building it the way you want, not what the factory thinks what should work. Sometimes that could be good and bad. Given the choice to go between a high end factory rifle like a AI or Sako or a custom built for my .308 rifle. I would pick the AI or Sako. And I already have a custom in 7WSM already.

AW. I love my TRG, but the stock does not feel as rugged as the stock on the AI (have heard from good sources that TRG stocks do break on occasion). Before you drop that much coin, I recommend that you examine/handle both. Better yet, shoot them too. By the end of it you will be pushing 7-9K...

I had a custom built done and it should be getting here next week, I was also thinking about a AW before I ordered my Tac Ops but I decided to have a rifle built with the components I wanted. my opinion is get it the way you want it, if your set on the AW and get the AE, you will regret it and wont be happy, not because the AE isnt a good platform, but because its not what you wanted. Save a little more and get the rifle you want.

I bought an Ai AW 308 about two months ago,it is a solid rifle no doubt. It is the best rifle ive owened yet,it fits me well.You need to make sure you like the AI stock and that your comfortable behind it before making the big purchase on the AI rifle. My Aw is now getting rebarreld in 22" 260 rem.I dont regret spending the cash on it,its the folder,20" 308 flutted ,no brake.The AW is heavy enough that you do not need a brake.
I owend the AE mkII 308 20" for a short period of time and it too is a very great shooting rifle,and every bit as accurate as the AW.I only sold it to buy a trg22 20".I wanted to see what the trg22 was like and how it fit me.If youre not going to push the rifle to the limits then the AE is just a great option to consider.You will be able to afford good glass and be done.

The Trg is very comforatble to shoot,and very accurate too. Although with the factory bipods and brake it all adds up to the equivalent as an AE 20".It You only buy the accesories once and dont look back.YEs bipods are expensive but you can go Harris or Atlas too.You have options as you do with the AI rifles.From rifles you are considering you wont be dissapointed with any of them.
As far as glass goes the Nightforce or Premier can be a good alternative to the big boy S&B 5-25x56.

BTW-If you go AW I suggest the dovetail mount and not the Pic rail unless you have a specific requirement for the Pic rail.

AIAW gets another vote from me. However, the reason that I got it because I wanted an AW. I have looked into the AE MkII. It is just as solid and accurate as the AW. So it comes down to personal preference. You can't go wrong with either AW or AE MkII.

Knowing what I know now: get the S&B first. If you can afford it then do the AW.
You can always get a TRG later.
What I did: I got the TRG with the an S&B because "I thought I couldn't afford both an AW and an S&B.(also got TRG with all the factory extras-who freakin cares about the exchange rate?! As one guy on the hide said, 'you are going to be dead a long time'!)
Reality was: after spending for another safe load of guns, ammo, scopes, ammo accessories, etc blah blah blah, I actually did have more than enough cash to buy the AW and S&B in the first place (which was the first choice anyway).

I just looked up pricing, I didn't realise with the options that an AW would end up adding up to $7k or so (folding stock, cheekpiece, etc.) I thought I would be into it for the $5500 or so I saw, I didn't realise that was base price.

$7k would really be pushing my budget, and I can see why price aside, there aren't many TRG lovers on this thread. I'd be into this package for more than $10g when it was all said and done, including the scope.

I'm leaning towards the TRG now, but considering the AE because of the recommendations in this thread (respect.)

Both great guns, Ive had both and the TRG stock fit me better. Both shot the same, cleaned the same, cost about the same when all was added, in fact they are very similar. AI probably more rugged, but few people on this forum will know that, go speak to somebody who carries 1 for a living to confirm that. TRY both before you spend, they are peas in a pod but 1 will feel right (more right than the other). You will not be dissapointed by either or feel shortchanged by either, they are as good as it gets and very few people shoot up to either rifles potential. Good luck with your choice.

I don't have access to an AW, but a friend has a 700 in an AICS, I'll get some time behind that before I make a decision.

As for everyone suggesting investing in training, I completely agree. I did sign up for the online training, and I will be looking into doing some live training. I asked Beamergirl, and RO won't be coming to the east coast this year, so it means time off from work, and I normally try to vacation with my wife, so I'm going to have to look into something more close by.

I would suggest you looked for a used AW. I got a used one with all the accessories (folder, AI bipod, extra mags, hard case, rubber feet, etc) for $5500 and allegedly "only 100 rounds through it." The 100 rounds was BS and the PO had mucked up the trigger and a few other items but I fixed the issues at no cost(thanks to Stacy); added an S&B 5-25 sand the thing shoots great. I'm into it about $8500 "all in" and could not be happier.

You can get an AE MkII with folding stock, brand new, for roughly $500-600 much more than the TRG. You're going to be saving about $200 on the bipod going with the AI instead of the TRG, another $200 on the brake (standard on that build, or you can save money by not ordering it at all), and then $200 or so on the pic rail (standard on all AEs). At the end of the day, the difference in price between the TRG and the AE basically vanishes when you look at the entire rifle system. You're not giving up anything in quality, accuracy, or durability by going with the AE instead of the AW.
