Just bought my first .338 Savage. Now I want to get the best discount I can on the first round of brass before I start reloading. Is there any deals out there?

.338 Lapua, DEALS....hahahah that's funny.

Bruno's is usually the least expensive followed by Powder Valley and Champion, as cheap is inappropriate in anything .338 or Lapua.

If you can still find 100 pieces of new Lapua brass for $225 plus shipping consider yourself lucky.

Right now on Brunos per piece price is $2.38
500 Pieces (the next smallest order) = $1185

250 Scenars are at or above .63 per bullet and probably just had or will have another price increase.

+1 nothing in 338 is inexpensive; reloading cuts the buy new cost by a ton, but its all expensive. 375 CheyTac and 408 CheyTac take it to a whole new level of $$$ pain.

LOL, The lapua is not chambered for cartridges, it's chambered for $5 bills! I would get quality lapua brass as the life is fantastic as long as you anneal and don't max em out every load. As far as projectiles.......... good luck. There are way too many options to really know what your gun will like right out of the box. I went ahead and got 3 different bullets in 2 weights and started out with 3 powders. That's just a drop in the bucket but it told me a lot....... Bottom line is that this is not a cheap round to hobby with but it sure is fun!

Isn't buying a .338 Savage like buying a Kia that gets 2mpg?

It's not actually THAT bad.

I have worked out multiple times over the past few days that you can reload 338 Lapua, using quality components (like Scenar bullets, good powder, Federal primers, and amortizing the brass over 10 firings, you get about $1.15 per round.

I have found at least 2 other shooters who confirm hitting the same number basically independently.

That's twice the cost of 308, but a long way from "a $5 bill".

Get a few friends to go in with you on a brass buy at Brunos. We bought 1000pieces of 338L from them for about $1900 so $1.90 ea than split them up 3 ways. Still not cheap but cheaper. The brass lasts a long time if you don't abuse it. I've got 11 or more firings on many of mine and they're still going. Get a group buy together on components.

with the lapua there is no such thing I cheap. Good quality components minus brass you can reload for a .75 a round make the brass last at least 5 firings and you are still under 2 dollars a round. Look for once fire brass by lapua that will save you money and also look for bullets on here.

Well, if you are buying Lapua Scenar bullets, then they are about $.75 to $.85 apiece. If you are loading SMK's then you can cut it down to about $.55 apiece if you buy in boxes of 500. As for other bullets I am not sure since those are the two that I load.

What do you prefer the scenars or the SMK's? Are the scenar's worth the extra .25 to .35 cents?

Yes. If you're shooting at ranges that call for a .338 the Scenars are worth the $$. The Berger is another excellent choice that's worth the dough.

As a new owner of a Sako TRG 42 in 338 Lapua, I can still honestly say that buying a Savage 338 Lapua is more like buying a Mustang Boss versus a BMW. The Boss is less costly and less sophsiticated, but gets around the race track just about as fast.

That Savage is a pretty nice combination of price and performance, just as the Boss is. The high price of required accessories for the TRG nearly got me into the Savage, but I love the ergonmics, lower weight, and fit and finish of the TRG, and I did find a slightly used one that eased the financial pain a bit. But the Savage was definitely in the running.

Except that a Boss 302 is faster than an M3.
