Can someone point me to the real world reality of buying a supressor (I am in Colorado). I have a Rem 700 on a 26" heavy varmit barrel with AICS stock and want to get one. I know they are costly but what are the hoops I have to jump through?

Re: Buying a Supressor

not hard at all. if you have a good class 3 dealer most of the time all you have to do is sign youre name to the forms. if not you send 2 copies of atf form 4 2 copies of fingerprint cards 2 passport photos and a citizenship form. they keep it for @4 months sign it and send it back then you can have youre suppressor. the wait times varies my last was 4 month one before that was 3. and there are other ways like if you have a trust, or corporation. all in all not as bad as most people think.

Some gunsmiths are also do machine work but not all. Surf the Hide and I am sure you can find one in your area. If not, do a internet search. You can ship the rifle off and have the work done.

velocity change is minimal. the POI does usually shift. It will depend on the gun and the supressor combo. It will shift but the shift stays consistant with the can on, so you need a supressed zero and an unsuppressed zero.

There will be some Point Of Impact change with and without the can but it should be uniform and at most a few inches. Most suppressors tend to tighten up your groups. Velocity does increase slightly. Just my experience.

That's right!

If you have a nice dealer, he will probably let you come over and cuddle it every now and then

Re: Buying a Supressor

Ok here is the deal, I am a dealer here are the steps.

1) dealer fills out two copies of the form 4 and a certificate of compliance.
2) signatures are needed from the buyer on the above two items plus needs to provided 2 blue finger print cards filled out plus two passport photos.
3) the photos go on the back of the form 4
4) Both Form 4's (singed by both the dealer and the buyer) with the photos attached get dropped off at the local CLEO for the local back ground approval.
5) after the CLEO sign off the form 4's come back to the dealer, (the dealer should have at this point the 2 completed finger print cards and the certification of compliance) takes all three items plus a check made for 200 made to the batf. (this is the application fee)
6) after approx 4-8 months depending on the examiner the DEALER will get 1 copy of the approved signed form 4 (or denied) (this is where the buyer gets a phone call)
7) Buyer then comes into the store and gets the original form 4 (i as a dealer always make two copies, i give an extra to the buyer and keep one in a file) the buyer gets their item
8 ***** IF FIREARM*** a 4473 form has to be done. BUT no nics is preformed due to the fact of an APROVED NFA ITEM. But the form has to be completed.

one side note, paper work at the national level can only be submitted BUY law if the dealer has the item on had. SOO the point is, if the dealer has to order the item he has to wait till it is MFG then mailed to him/her to begin.

Hope this helps

Re: Buying a Supressor

Google Tornado Technologies. That is where I send my barrels they do a good job. You need to know what suppressor you are going to use and they will thread it per the specs of the suppressor company.

Ours is a little different since we mostly do transfers on a Trust or LLC here. There is only 1 county around here that will actually sign off, but most people live in Harris and they will not sign. Plus going with a trust is easier then having to get a signoff every single time. Instead of 2 copies, of the form 4, we do 4, 1 customer copy, 1 FFL copy and 2 to the ATF. Only 1 Certificate of Compliance gets printed.
