The CA grid is fragile as it is, not just capacity-wise. In a graduate threat analysis class I took, one report showed how the California grid, (outside city of LA, no explosives, saws or wrenches needed) could be shut down hard by simple attacks along 11 specific line segments, each spanning remote locations.
I wouldn’t expect a terrorist to figure out such an attack, (but a disgruntled electrician?????) but the point they are so vulnerable at that few if susceptible points on CAISO’s transmission network should be real concern if you live there.

I was wondering today how is it that California can be running out of electricity? It’s the biggest exitus state in the nation with a huge portion of their population buggering off because they don’t wanna be raped or have their front stairs shit on by homeless drug addicts.
How the hell is it that they can be running out of power? They should be awash in power since they don’t have any people there. And most of the people there are living in refrigerator boxes.

It wouldn't even require the attack on the full 11 critical locations. A fraction of those can upset where power is coming from and going, and end up in a cascading effect. Relay coordination, generation response, frequency transients can turn to shit and wind up in the dark really fast. Remember 1994 when almost the whole lower half of the state went in the dark just over a relay coordination issue ? I'm sure now with the partially deregulated market that transmission and generation are working together even better now ...... The other big issue that really isn't fully proven what will happen is the combination of rolling iron providing frequency control and all the electronically controlled generation such as wind and solar are going to respond in a large scale transient.

Power transformers are running up to 2 year lead times. Circuit breakers almost a year. Bulk power transformers are probably a lot longer than regular distribution power transformers. I haven’t seen a quote for a bulk in a while.
A lot of California’s problem isn’t access to MW. It’s got all its capacity too far from its load and there aren’t enough transmission lines to get it there. If an eco terrorist wanted to do some easy damage they would need to attack bulk transformers and EHV circuit breakers in a few locations simultaneously and it would be mayhem. And not just for California, the entire western interconnect. Instantly having excess generation and no load is just as bad for the system as excess load and a shortfall on generation. The frequency will start to run away high instead of low which is just as bad really.

The substation transformers we buy aren’t quite 2 years but close. We deferred a lot of substation upgrades because we can’t get 15kV breakers.
And that even before that, they were importing a huge amount of power from out of state generation plants. Due to their NIMBY policies.
Electric cars have ZERO to do with saving the planet. It's ALL about controlling the population's ability to travel freely outside of .gov oversight.

Iirc, most of the large transformers our grid uses aren't even made in America any more. They are also custom to the grid they serve so there aren't universal spares that can be kept on hand.
Don't underestimate all the illegals we have here with their freshly minted EBT card.

The thing in this article that is interesting is the 27 days to fix it. These parts are not at your local Home Depot or Lowes.
And the people that know how to do the work are becoming fewer and fewer, they are not the ones getting paid $10k from Biden on their student loans. The people that know how to fix this stuff are the ones that got the "second prize" or "fall back" jobs that those college educated people look down on and make fun of.
Lets see what happens in another 10 years when even fewer people know how to wire in an outlet.

Generating with natural gas is a lot more expensive than what's in the transmission lines (for now), but it's nice to be the only house on the block with full power when everyone else is without...

I have one as well, but for other reasons, living out in the sticks we loose power at least monthly. I wanted to keep the food in the freezers and fridge good.
We had our old one for roughly 10-15years, it started drinking about a quart of oil a month. The new one we got will also run the AC so that is a plus. Mine runs on LP, there is no gas out where I live.
To tie this into this thread we bought one that was a bit larger then we needed, they are in pretty short supply. The electrician that installed it said most of the production is going to Cali and Texas.....gee I wonder why.
One of the kids the wife grew up with manages an old folks home in Texas, he had to fill out some paperwork so his facility would not be included in the planned rolling blackouts. That could be a life or death thing for people in those facilities.
Funny so now people are going to be making their own power using internal combustion engines in CA. Wonder why they don't just do solar and wind.....makes you think don't it.

I agree. I am a pretty big Mike Roe fan, and like most of what he has to say about the "trades" and how we have made them the jobs for those that could not cut it, and how that has destroyed us.
Personally, I roll back and think about the people that get their hands dirty day in and day out, they usually don't buy what those that push a college education are selling. So those that push that had to figure out a way to make that entire area a "well you failed at this, there is always that" and it makes me just sick to my stomach these ass holes have done that.

I wanted to say one last thing on this, then I will shut up about it.
I was watching again a Mike Roe thing, and he has a young girl on there that went through his program and walked out into a job at $80k a year. She is like 20 years old, has zero debt and bringing in 80k welding. She had a job lined up before she got out of school, there is that kind of demand.
That is why you have to wait until after they check it off, you either use the Solaredge energy hub inverters with the backup interface which will allow you to run with no utility as it will disconnect you from the grid. Or you have a transfer switch in your AC connection to your inverter and power the generator there (now this does not work with all inverters and generators) It does with the older Solaredge inverters that are the pre-energy hub and my diesel generator. You have to turn "export" off to run like this, so the inverter will only pick up load and not send any back to the generator. With the energy hub inverter and batteries this can be accomplished also. Bottom line is you have to trick the inverter that there is grid power there to come out of shutdown mode, this has to be accomplished only when you are isolated from the grid.

A lot of folks in Texas thought they were set with one of those but then found out the Natural Gas stopped coming out of the pipe when extreme cold shutdown pumping equipment that was electrically heated.
