Either I'm too damn tired or suffering from a brain cramp. I'm trying to figure out what the minimum height rings I need to mount a Nikon 2.5-10x44 MonarchX on an AR flat-top. Scope has 30mm tube and will have butler creek flip caps on. Help this idiot figure out what rings I need to get to clear...

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

Get a handful of change and stack change under scope on both sides of erector housing until its the height you want, then measure the change stack and add 1/2 the diameter of the tube.

IMHO:
<span style="font-weight: bold">LaRue Tactical </span>
- Extends/Throws the ring mounting position further forward. Enables you to shoot "Nose to CH" w/ proper eye relief.
- One Piece
- QD Levers & Adjustable for Fit [Return to Zero]
- LaRue Quality/Guarantee
- Proper Height(s)
<span style="text-decoration: underline">
Two Choices:</span>
<span style="font-weight: bold">
LaRue Tactical SPR / M4 Scope Mount QD LT-104</span>
- 1.5" Height 30mm
- 0 MOA; Clears most rear BUIS
- Most popular for Mid/High Mag. Optics

<span style="font-weight: bold">LaRue Tactical SPR-S QD Mount LT-158</span>
- 1.41" Height 30mm
- 10MOA Built In
- Rear BUIS need to be more selective

fwiw/IMHO: Optimum AR Scope Height is from 1.4" to 1.5" from receiver top to center of optic.

Have a great one

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

SPDGG, I run LaRue on some other stuff but I don't necessarily need the quick release ability on this rifle. That being said, I probably do need to push the scope forward and may need that SPR mount for that fact. Thanks for the numbers.

Cant go wrong having it even if its not needed

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

that is brilliant.

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

Formula:

[rail height + ring height to center] - [objective bell diameter x 0.5]

A value greater than zero clears the barrel

Actually, for an AR, go with the Larue mount. The LT-104 gets the scope up 1.5" and the LT-158 gets it up 1.42".

can i use this to see if a scope with certain rings clears on a rifle too? im thining about putting a buckmaster 3-9x40 on a r700 using a seekins base and seekins rings, not sure what rings to use yet though. thanks

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

seekins base:
.44” for rear height or .29” for front height.

seekins low rings:
.75 to center

objective:
40 mm

(.29+.75)-(40x.5)= 18.6

uh is this right? or do i do math with .40 for the objective?

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

No, you need to convert inches to mm. 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Also, you don't use the objective size; you need to use the diameter of the bell, which is bigger.

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

Estimating the tube diameter to be 49 mm:
[(19.05 + 7.366) - 49(0.5)] = 1.916

You have ~ 2 mm of clearance over the barrel.

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

measure your bell diameter and then get a true measurement. If shouldn't be that much more than 49 mm. On my NXS 50 mm, the tube diameter is about 59 mm.

According to midwayusa, your objective bell is 49 mm. So you will end up with ~ 2 mm of clearance.

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

ahh ok thankyou, midway usa is the only site ive found so far that lists bell diameter. well, if i wanted to use butler creek flip caps, i would need to go with medium heigh rings, wouldn't i? or are the caps like 1mm giving me 1 mm or clearance

i got lucky and didnt even have to do math. i hadnt found this site and didnt even have the internet when i bought my scope-rifle-rings. i had the rail on my rifle and my scope but no way to know which rings to use. i stacked some pennys on my rail and set the scope on the pennys. then i looked in the midwayusa catalog where burris listed the heights of their rings. simple and no math involved. but, burris is the only maker i noticed that listed their ring heights. didnt measure the bell diameter or anything but the pennies.

sobrbiker-GMTA huh?

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

I think you should be ok with the caps on this setup. It will be very close, but even if it does touch, it shouldn't be adding much stress. If you have a set of butler creeks right now, place them in a pair of calipers and see how thick they are. I don't have my rifles with me right now, otherwise I would do it.

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

Most ring makers will list the heights of their rings somewhere. You just have to dig a little deeper with some companies.

Re: ?? Calculating Ring Height Needed

well the problem is seekins doesn't make anything but low in 1 in tubes. what if i put the caps on and see that i need med height? how much pressure from the caps on the barrel is too much? is it ok if they are barely touching?
