Hey, Im going on a corsican ram hunt in March and maybe able to pull off a managment bore hunt. Only have a .243 for hunting. Was looking to buy .308 but waiting till I can get a GAP M40A1. Will a 100 Grain bullet do the job on a medium sized bore or should I not even attempt it. Federal ammo website says it will do the job but looking for some personal experience from any hunters out there.

Re: can .243 be used on wild boar hunt?

I would say yes to both. As always shot placement and bullet construction is very important. I have heard the rams are very tough as well (Not the St. Louis Rams of course).

Im sure Ill get jazzed for this, but the only North Amercan big game I wouldnt shoot a .243 at,if its all I had and everything was perfect, is a grizz. And Id bet somewhere, sometime that little round has even taken one of them.

Re: can .243 be used on wild boar hunt?

I hear nothing but good things about this round...reason i bought it was for the variety of game u can hunt and barley any kick to it...with a .243 and .308 i think all the north american hunting species are covered.

Re: can .243 be used on wild boar hunt?

I hunted boar in South Florida and a 243 would be real iffy for some of the bigger boar. As always..shot placement and bullet selection are most important. I would go with a Barnes TSX or TTSX, then there is no question on jacket separation. Some of those big boars are damn tuff and if you don't hit'em in the right place...they'll take off quick.
Best of Luck!

Absolutely! I have a .243 and put it past my 30-30 after looking at ballistics. .243 will out perform a 30-30. Buy some good expanding penetrating ammo and you'll have no problem

I don't think that putting Core-Lokt bullets in the same category with Partitions is a good idea. Core-Lokts are great for what they are, a nice cheap hunting bullet. The Partitions are one of the best hunting bullets around. If you are worried about penetration go with the Partition. If you want something cheap go with the Core-Lokt (I have 2k in 165 gr .308).

YMMV

You can always pick up some FMJs run one through the heart, spine, or brain. The boar shouldn't go too far

Re: can .243 be used on wild boar hunt?

ive had pass thrus with the 95 gr hornady sst light mags on 130lb boars, 3100fps and still holds its weight, i wouldnt hesitate to shoot any hog with a .243, if hes REALLY big just shoot him in the in the ear

Re: can .243 be used on wild boar hunt?

Going to to just use the 100 grain nosler partition....should work from what I have heard from everyone...now i just hope the timeing works out and can squeeze in the hunt

Re: can .243 be used on wild boar hunt?

243 is a very under estimated round! Hornady makes some great bullets for it. I know a lot of big deer 250-300lb have pass through's from guys up here. Its also used for black bear, but that would be my limit!

Re: can .243 be used on wild boar hunt?

a lot of time if i have my .243 i will just shoot them in the shoulder blade which so far on every hog ive shot will immobilize them then i place my second in the ear. some people find that cruel thoe, but even if you have a .22 you hit them right in that ear or behind that ear its night night time for little miss piggy

Re: can .243 be used on wild boar hunt?

I shot one in the head with a .243 and it hit and went halfway down the pig right along the loins, 80 grain winchester silver box, power point I think. It was a big pig too, probably 450lbs.

I shot a pair of Sika deer this morning with a .243, using 85 grain TSX, one shot, two animals! The penetration of this round is pretty good using the TSX, and picking your shot. I have shot MANY hogs with the .243, 6.8, 223, and 7.62, and ummmm 300 WM. I really like the .243, using the TSX 85's. I wish Barnes would make a MRX in the 243 size, that would be a even better LR round.

I would NOT use it with Corelokt or similiar jacketed bullets. Nosler also makes a good solid bullet, I think it has a ballistic tip, those are pretty good too. Make sure it is not a varmint round like a hornady Vmax, they sometimes don't penetrate very good, but make spectacular shock wounds.

Use your 243, get some good solids and smile!
