Gunsmithing Can a 20” Tikka be threaded without removing the barrel?

Can a 20” Tikka .204 sporter be threaded without removing the barrel?

I read some old threads here saying it could be done with 24”.

I guess it’s not the end of the world to remove it, but it’s a hassle and more expensive. It also shoots great and don’t want to chance changing that.

It depends on your gunsmiths lathes spindle bore and tooling. I have one lathe that can't, and one that can by using a spider. Check with smiths around your area.

Thanks. Planning to have my T3 Tactical Re-threaded from M18-1 to 1/2x28as well. It’s also 20”.

I can do it on my lathe and it is a very common gunsmithing lathe. You should have no issue finding someone to do it. I highly suggest putting effort into finding a local gunsmith. If you find a good one who does quality, timely work it is priceless. You will surely have more gunsmithing work you need in the future and it gets old shipping guns.

I can be done between center on most lathe. Your gunsmith might have to make an adapter if he does not have one already.

I’ll do some more searching in my area. LGS took 2 months to thread an AR barrel last time and accuracy decreased. Let’s say my confidence and patience ran out. I’ll call around and make some visits before I commit this time. Thanks again

Completely agree, it is easy to do, and length of the barrel is irrelevant. Just make a cylinder piece from any material (Alum. is a typical choice) to fit the receiver in place of bolt. Done it many times.

Just to follow up. LRI did an excellent job threading my barrel. Communication was outstanding. I received emails upon them receiving my barreled action, pics of the threading upon completion, then shipping info. Very professional. Highly recommend.
