I am debating between an Ultra 7 or 9 and cannot decide. I have a makeshift 7"/9" Can on my rifles now to see how the added length feels. I wouldn't have thought it, but the 9" sure does feel long at the end of my 26" GAP compared to the 7". My thoughts are that I will cut my barrels down to 22" if I get a 9" can. I want the quietest setup I can get.... Buuut I often read the difference between a 7/9 in decibel reduction is negligible on the same rifle. Knowing that shorter barrels can be louder, is it a futile move to buy a longer can for better sound reduction only to cut barrels down shorter for more maneuverability, which technically can make them harder to suppress, netting in a wash of decibel reduction and giving up velocity in the process?

I know I am thinking way too hard about this. Just wondering... I sure want the 9" Ultra... but it is pretty damn long! Anyone here hunt with a 9" can and a 22"-24" barrel?

I can notice a difference when shooting a 16.5” and then putting the can on a 24” barrel, neither are loud by any means but the longer barrel is quieter. Ultra 7 on 6.5 creed

Haven't shot a can on it yet but my 6.5cm is noticably louder cut to 17" than it was at 22". All my research pointed to a suppressor giving a slight FPS increase. That doesn't replace barrel length. Might equate to about 10% of what a barrel would give. I gave up on chasing FPS and just made a lightweight rifle I could carry easily and shoot to 500.

My experiences are with 16” and shorter, down to 6” on my 300blk SBR.

What I have noticed is that with the same cans (I have 762-SDN-6 and Omega) the longer barrel is a bit quieter and a bit mellower in tone. I can’t answer Specifically about using a shorter barrel and longer can as I haven’t done that.

I went through this with my 24” 30-06 hunting rifle and my Ultra 9 can. It was getting close to new barrel time and I wanted to shorten the package for hunting. So I went to a 20” 280 AI Criterion remage barrel to make up the loss of ballistics from 24 to 20”. Which I did. I also use the loss in weight to go to a heavier/ stiffer barrel. I was able to use the same weight 168 VLD-Hunting Berger bullet which had a higher BC in 7 mm over the 30 cal. I took a Wyoming antelope at 638 yrds this past season with it. I am very protective of my hearing and this is more than comfortable for hunting. On the range with berms , building and canyon walls around, I use ear pro. I recently upgraded from a Harris to a TBAC Bipod. LOVE that pod!
