Im looking for a good hunting load for coyotes in .308. I heard that the hornady 110 vmax are really good. Can someone tell me about how much powder, Im using varget, and a coal for that load. Thanks!!!

Re: can someone recommend a good coyote load in .308

178 gr Amax
45.6 gr RE15
2.825" COAL
Hornady Match Case
26" 1:12 R700P

I got one on the run a couple weeks ago right under 100 yards and blew his rear torso off. The only thing holding him together was his intestines. I know the 178 might be a little heavy and not flat as shooting as you'd probably like, but after seeing that coyote drop dead I definitely recommend the Amax's as well.

Whatever goes through their lungs works pretty good.

The nosler 125 ballistic tip 51.2 of winchester 748 or the hornady 168 amax pushed by 45.1 of varget. both are good loads and do a number on deer also. Both these loads are for the 308 and are set off by the federal 210m primer

Chest or head shot, it should not matter.....dead coyote.
Follow the Sierra manual, pick the bullet and powder you want to go with.....Load up....Test your load, tailor if need be.
Go kill coyotes.
One load may work for one rifle but be way different on another rifle.
So you may have to experiment either way.
Happy hunting

Lapua Scenar 155 + 46.3gr Varget behind Lapua brass with Fed210M primers.

This is my long range load, and also used for take down as well.

Fantastic penetration imo. I have split foxes in half with these (shot front on, passing thru the rear), had small pass thrus on side shots and enough force to punch thru 3mm steel at 600 yards.

This will yield you about 2900 FPS.

You could also use 110 grain projectiles, which will have you at about 3200 FPS, but really anything will do on a dog.

The only good coyote is a dead one </div></div>

Thats too nice and rare a bullet (or so i hear) to waste on dogs

I run 155gr Amax over 46gr Varget. Dead is Dead no matter how you look at it.

If you are pelt hunting put down the gun and buy some traps. Allows you to really get midevil with them.

I do not see that much pelt damage with the .308. I just use the 175 SMK LR load.

Once you use a 20 TAC or 22-250 on coyotes, it is tough to go back to a .308 Win. You are making it hard on yourself.

I use 155g Lapua, they work excellent, if you can do your part they'll do theirs. I am running 2825 with 45.4g Varget in lapua brass, 210m primers. 22" bartlein tube.

The coyote's around here (Kansas) have mange really bad, so pelts are worthless. I like to hit them with my normal target load of 45.5 Varget under 168 Hornady BTHP's. They don't go anywhere. It's pretty fun to shoot them at 400+ yards in the pastures and oil leases..if you miss they kind of look around dumbfounded...while you dial in the windage. The next shot usually is on it's mark.
