There's plenty of other things out there that will kill cancer cells, but gotta remember there's no money for doctors and big pharma in curing their patients. The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.
The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.
"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."
Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin's previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought.

Earlier work established that marijuana does contain cancer-causing chemicals as potentially harmful as those in tobacco, he said. However, marijuana also contains the chemical THC, which he said may kill aging cells and keep them from becoming cancerous.
Tashkin's study, funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse, involved 1,200 people in Los Angeles who had lung, neck or head cancer and an additional 1,040 people without cancer matched by age, sex and neighborhood.
They were all asked about their lifetime use of marijuana, tobacco and alcohol. The heaviest marijuana smokers had lighted up more than 22,000 times, while moderately heavy usage was defined as smoking 11,000 to 22,000 marijuana cigarettes. Tashkin found that even the very heavy marijuana smokers showed no increased incidence of the three cancers studied.

"This is the largest case-control study ever done, and everyone had to fill out a very extensive questionnaire about marijuana use," he said. "Bias can creep into any research, but we controlled for as many confounding factors as we could, and so I believe these results have real meaning."
Tashkin's group at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA had hypothesized that marijuana would raise the risk of cancer on the basis of earlier small human studies, lab studies of animals, and the fact that marijuana users inhale more deeply and generally hold smoke in their lungs longer than tobacco smokers -- exposing them to the dangerous chemicals for a longer time. In addition, Tashkin said, previous studies found that marijuana tar has 50 percent higher concentrations of chemicals linked to cancer than tobacco cigarette tar.
While no association between marijuana smoking and cancer was found, the study findings, presented to the American Thoracic Society International Conference this week, did find a 20-fold increase in lung cancer among people who smoked two or more packs of cigarettes a day.
The study was limited to people younger than 60 because those older than that were generally not exposed to marijuana in their youth, when it is most often tried.

Cure? No. A lot of benefits for various symptoms? Absolutely.

When I was much younger I'd go surfing with friends often and we'd sleep on the beach the night before (more freedom then) and one close friend was in and out of chemo. He refused to miss out and more than a few times we carried his ass down the short trail to the beach as he was curled up in a chemo induced ball of misery. Once on the beach someone would spark up a joint and in about 15 minutes he was sitting up, laughing, conversing and eating. It was a truly amazing transformation - at least for a while. Cancer ultimately got him but the weed made things much better for him while he was with us. From then on I realized there was at least some limited usefulness beyond the buzz.

I stopped imbibing not much after that but today have many friends that do including CEOs, doctors, and other professionals and decision makers that are highly successful in their fields and anything but a stereotypical stoner. Its like a lot of things - moderation is the key. Compared to alcohol - one who drinks all day is going to limit their potential and complicate their life just as one who smokes pot all day. An occasional drink at the appropriate time - fine. Same goes for cannabis and that how it is enjoyed by the friends mentioned. I was still living mostly full time in California when the conversation on legalization was ramping up. I asked a couple of cops I know their thoughts on the matter and they were fine with it. One who had been on the force over 20 years and, in all his time as a cop, said he never had a single call where some guy got stoned or came home stoned and hit his wife or kids. Clearly driving under the influence of anything is not good but we already have laws for that.

Medical uses are still being researched and almost all are yet to be proven outside of treating kids with epilepsy and a couple of other things. There is a ton of misinformation - for and against cannbis - out there right now. Relief of minor pain, insomnia, anxiety disorders, and other things can be helped with cannabis but due to fear and prohibition in the US we are way behind other countries such as Israel on research but changes to laws are making research toward actual "cures" possible. That said, cannabis is considered more benign for symtom relief than many of the pharmaceutical alternatives being prescribed today. The change in attitude is opening the door to more research with hallucinogenics that likely have more potential medical uses than cannabis.

Its well known that these things that are moving toward legalization are far less harmful over the long term to the individual and society as a whole than alcohol - make no mistake alcohol is a drug and a poison. One of my businesses involves alcohol distribution - I am a drug dealer - no denying that even if I am in compliance with he law.

While I personally was opposed to "legalization" - I'd rather it just be decriminalized - I think some good things are coming from it.

I don't know about other countries. But, in the U.S., it's a Schedule 1 drug, which makes it, at best, extremely difficult to use in medical research. There are additional hoops to jump through that other drug classes do not require. I suspect the dearth of effort to conduct research is likely financially motivated. There's no money in it.

As a healthcare professional with my entire education based in science, I can't help but scoff at the culturally-popular notion of "science" when it advances their agenda. MJ isn't medicine. There's no such thing as "medical marijuana."

Actual medicine has proven therapeutic value. PROVEN, tangible, measurable benefits. Actual medicine is delivered in therapeutic DOSES. How many milligrams per kg of weight? Every 4 hours? 6 hours? 8 hours? For how long? What about drug interactions? Max dose for 24 hour period? Contraindications? Black box warnings?

When I ask a "medical MJ" advocate those questions... they look at me funny. Even aspirin has dosage guidelines. MJ? Nah! Just take as much as FEELS GOOD. That's not medicine, folks.

If I'm prescribing ANYTHING, I have to be able to answer those questions as a matter of standard of care.

I'm not denying that MJ makes people FEEL better. But, it does not fit the definition of therapeutic medicine. Not until those questions can be answered, just as they are for EVERY OTHER medically-prescribed drug on the planet.

But, until it meets the scientific criteria of ALL OTHER therapeutic drugs, it ain't "medical."

Smoke it all you want. Bake it into treats all you want. Use the oils in your shampoo if you want. Use it to increase your appetite or settle your belly. But, it's not "medical." Smoking mj is about as healthy as smoking cigarettes or even birch bark. It's no secret that toxins and carcinogens are released from the combustion of organic materials. No getting around filling your lungs with tar either.

Vaping THC (and cannabiniod) has proven more dangerous than it's flavored nicotine alternatives.

Yet, I say legalize the shit. The only caveat I have is just like alcohol using any mind altering drug and putting others at risk (such as driving) needs to have consequences. Is there a way quickly and effectively test for THC levels?

I live close to the Nebraska border.
We have a neighbor from a wealthy Neb. farm family that bought a house around the corner to establish residence in Colo. to get CBD for their daughter. Something like Charlott's web.
She has some kind of affliction to her central nervous system but I don't what the medical terms are but that family had gone to the best Drs. they could and done all kinds of medicines to no avail, nothing changed and they had reached the end of their rope trying to help her.

When they first arrived the little girl was in a wheelchair/stroller they pushed her around in. I met her then, about a year and a half ago.

Today she rides her little bicycle around and stops by when she needs air in her tires or a repair of some sort like"Can you tighten my chain?" She has a good "Pit Boss"

I am proud to know Sammy and to have watched her get so much better.

I am equally proud that she knows when to push her bike and when to ride it and "Uncle Mike" will fix her up. FM

Part of the problem is that "modern medicine" only wants to acknowledge anything as good if they can find the single "magic bullet" compound that they can isolate, patent, regulate and make a ton of money from.
Not to say that's not a good idea, it's given us a lot of really amazing stuff.

But to totally ignore the more "traditional medicine" options where it's like... we don't know exactly what part of this concoction helps or exactly what it does, but here watch, it helps fix/cure/mask such and such, is very wrong and harms people greatly.

Just remember that just about every "illegal" drug you get up in arms about for the most part, is fully legal if you pay the government taxes, follow their rules, and make sure everyone along the chain gets their cut. Now the government may not allow you to pay the taxes because you are not part of the "in club" but that's another matter.

BUT there needs to be a big huge flashing warning that the currently popular, highly modified, hugely potent "cannabis" type stuff being marketed today is vastly different from the stuff popular back in the 60s. It CAN cause very bad side effects, especially when used by children and teens.

From my view point after just finishing 7 months of chemo some Doctors are full of shit.
I was with a pain management group for almot 11 years ( I will tell you how that worked out at the end)
I went in for a hernia operation on April 23rd of last year, the surgeon knew about my Non-hodgkin's lymphoma,he gave me platelets before surgery and all was well.
In the recovery room as I was leaving I keeled over dead from a widowmaker HA.

If not for my wife I'd be in the ground.
They had me cathed and stinted in under 25 minutes.
I had 100% blockage in 2 spots.
All was going well until the doctor poured the Heparin to me.

I spent 39 days in the ICU and another 30 days in a rehab facility
I am leaving a large amount of info out to keep this short

Back to the pain management Doctor.

He demanded that I start Medical marijuana treatment right away because of my chemo.
( I never complained to him about any side effects )
I told him that I'd like to look into it first.

After speaking to the 6 other doctors that were treating me every one of them said they would dismiss me from their practice is I started smoking weed.
I was ok with what they wanted.

I started to really dig into this marijuana thing.
I came to find out that my pain doctor had invested heavily into the main medical marijuana company in Ohio.
I'm talking millions.
So to finish this up I'll leave you with this.

In the 11+ years with this pain management doctor.

I never missed an appointment
I never failed a drug test
I never asked for more meds than were recommended.
I remained 100% compliant

When I came in for my follow up appointment.
The Doctor took it upon himself to fill out the paperwork for the ID card and demanded that I sign off.
I told him that I looked into it and that I had talked to all the other doctors treating me.

I tried explaining to him that I was told if I started smoking weed that I would be dismissed from their practices.

He was nice about it, he wrote my refill and away i went.
The next day I get a registered letter stating I was dismissed from his practice for non-compliance.

I'm not the only patient from the pain clinc that had this happen.

I have no problem decriminalizing it. But, I object to the label of "medical" when it is nothing of the sort. Not yet. It's no more "medicinal" than a shot of scotch, which also makes many people feel better.

But, until it meets the scientific criteria of ALL OTHER therapeutic drugs, it ain't "medical."

If some dumbass stoner tells you it will cure cancer or this and that (and there are a TON who believe that) they are absolutely talking out of their ass, but to say it has no medical benefits is absolutely absurd. It is very effective in cancer patients going through chemo or just sick people in general to help them get to eat. I witnessed that first hand with my grandpa a couple years ago. I have also witnessed it help someone control severe anxiety and BPD who meds and psychotherapy was not working for.

It has its medicinal uses, just not as many as the stoners will have you believe. Yes it should be legalized federally for medicinal use, actual medical use not loose as fuck like it here is in Florida where basically anyone who complains about anything can get a card. Recreational is debatable, personally I’m of the belief that legal weed isn’t good for society as it makes most people fucking lazy.

I wish people would stop lying about weed on both sides. It doesn't cure everything. It's not some miracle drug.

On the other side, it's not some super danger to humanity. Alcohol is way worse yet most of us drink. Nobody is harmed by someone chilling on their deck after work, lighting up, and relaxing.

Negative Ghost Rider. On all claims in your post. You're quite simply mistaken and unaware.

Opioid pharmaceuticals have ALL gone through extensive testing, studies, FDA approval, etc. So, yeah... that claim falls flat.

I said it (cannabis) has no PROVEN medical benefits. You have to understand, I have an actual education in this. I didn't say it didn't have benefits. I do not argue that some people have experienced benefits from "medicating" themselves with any variety of substances. But, cannabis is NOT YET in the same category as Penicillin, aspirin, hydrocodone, furosemide, ramipril, warfarin, or the thousands of other legitimate drugs that have all been tested, re-tested, studied, etc.

With those drugs, we know the dosages, interactions, adverse effects, black box warnings, etc. With Cannabis? We have NO IDEA. We have no references. No studies. No indications. No contraindications. Dosages. Drug interactions. No prescription guidelines (like ALL OTHER drugs). And, so on.

MAYBE we will... SOME DAY. But, we don't have it NOW. As such, it has no PROVEN MEDICAL (scientific) benefits. You can call it anything you want... except "medical." To call it "medical," it must meet a certain bar of scientific validity, again... like all other drugs. Until then... I don't care if it's legalized for whatever reason... decriminalized... recreational... experimental... whatever. But, it's NOT medical. Not yet.

And, yeah... I HAVE to "operate under that logic." My license to practice depends on it. My 8 years of education dictates it. My oath and ethics demand it.

From my view point after just finishing 7 months of chemo some Doctors are full of shit.
I was with a pain management group for almot 11 years ( I will tell you how that worked out at the end)
I went in for a hernia operation on April 23rd of last year, the surgeon knew about my Non-hodgkin's lymphoma,he gave me platelets before surgery and all was well.
In the recovery room as I was leaving I keeled over dead from a widowmaker HA.

If not for my wife I'd be in the ground.
They had me cathed and stinted in under 25 minutes.
I had 100% blockage in 2 spots.
All was going well until the doctor poured the Heparin to me.

I spent 39 days in the ICU and another 30 days in a rehab facility
I am leaving a large amount of info out to keep this short

Back to the pain management Doctor.

He demanded that I start Medical marijuana treatment right away because of my chemo.
( I never complained to him about any side effects )
I told him that I'd like to look into it first.

After speaking to the 6 other doctors that were treating me every one of them said they would dismiss me from their practice is I started smoking weed.
I was ok with what they wanted.

I started to really dig into this marijuana thing.
I came to find out that my pain doctor had invested heavily into the main medical marijuana company in Ohio.
I'm talking millions.
So to finish this up I'll leave you with this.

In the 11+ years with this pain management doctor.

Yep... doctors don't know everything. Some are better than others. But, they aren't gods. But, they have to conform to the laws and rules of the state boards that issue their licenses to practice. They also have to cover their asses legally. Unfortunate, but a very real concern. Practicing outside the accepted norms carries VERY high risks. Such is the environment we live in. There is a term: Standard of Practice. Stray from it, and doctors can lose their license and even their freedom.

My 11 y.o. daughter went through chemo for 2-1/2 years (leukemia). My mother and grandmother both had cancer, too... each multiple times. Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with that shit. Cancer fucking sucks. And, it was HELL to go through with my daughter.
