I'm looking to upgrade my Centerpoint

to one of the SS optics.
I was looking at the fixed powers, 10x, 12x, 16x. I'm not sure what to get.
I can only shoot up to 260ish yards with a .223 so I'm thinking the 16x will be to much. And I also use this gun for coyotes. I will have a micro dot mounted off-set for close 0-50 yd shots on coyotes.

So what power option would work well for that type of shooting?

Needed to specify budget $200-400

I guess I should have stated I'm looking at a small budget. $200-400

One more vote cast for the 10x among the options you have listed (although the pie was pretty damned tempting).

Personally, despite you having the micro-dot for the closer range, quick shot work, I'd opt for a variable with a low end of 2.5-3x up to around 8-10x which will give you a great deal more flexibility with your optics that a fixed 10x.

I voted 10x but really a 4x is all you need at that 260 range. I have the SS 1-6 HD ordered for my .308 with 16" barrel and I expect be happy enough with that. I do have the SS 12x for the range though, that's a great scope for the money.

Couple opinions...

Honestly, to echo what a few others have mentioned, I would reconsider a few of your choices. If you want a magnification even up to 10x you would probably best be suited with a variable scope (I would stay below that fixed) like perhaps bushnell 3200 2-7 or 3-9, or buckmaster, and on the high end of your budget low variable zeiss conquest can be had. May also want to consider browsing some of the classifieds to get in on something you might not afford new. Their are several good values in your price range and will be a signifigant upgrade from your centerpoint. If you are sold on only fixed power I would personally stay lower than 10x.

I would go with the 10X if you are set on a fixed power scope. If not give camera land a call. Last time I did, I picked up a customer returned (never mounted as far as I could tell) 2.5-10 PST at a great price.

Well I guess my choices have changed to the 3-9x SS or the 5-15x Vortex.
Between those I'm leaning towards the Vortex. But the SS does have a better reticule. Mildot vs Milquad.

^ then do the 3-9. I think I would prefer the SS 3-9x over my SS 12x42 because of the variable. But I didn't actually need the variable magnification for what I use it for so I didn't spend the hundreds more for it. At your range requirement the low end of 5 with that Vortex is still more than you really need. Obviously the 3 power of the SS is better for everything getting closer in to you & should be better field of view. The Mil-Quad reticle is worth the choice too.

Thing is I will be getting a dedicated lr/precision rifle next year and will have access to longer ranges. So I will be moving whatever optic I end up getting to that rifle. Considering that would I be better off saving a little more money and getting a higher-end, more flexable optic? Sorry for all the changing ideas guys. I <span style="text-decoration: underline">really</span> appreciate the time you all are taking to help me.

I wouldn't worry about the future rifle yet. Get either a 6 or 10x, enjoy shooting, learn. And when you do get that future rifle, get another SS scope that you can afford

If you decide to go with the 3-9 SS, know that it's very good as well, I'm thinking of picking up another one myself.

I'm a little confused. Are you planning to lose the rifle you're using now to finance the purchase of your rifle next year? Or, will you still have one for LR target, one for hunting (coyote 50-220 yards max)? Reason i'm asking is that you may have different wants and needs from whichever riflescope you purchase.

Also, I don't know where you heard praise for BSA, but my personal opinion is that you would be wasting your money. Getting the BSA as far as I'm concerned will be like buying a second Centerpoint, but with a worse reputation.
BSA:
Will not retain any value, good luck if you ever want to sell it....
Its side parrallax adj. will not work as you want, as well as any other of the features you're looking for.
Don't do it man! Think of it like a bad drug habit, stay away and break that thought process.
You are on the edge of getting a perfectly decent scope... Add on that extra $50 and break through barrier to a reputable manufacturer (nikon, bushnell, swfa, burris, leupold, Weaver, vortex) that have offerings at your pice point.

Between ANY BSA scope and ANY SS scope, I would pick the SS 100% of the time and be thankful.

Yes...on the front end you'll save some coin, but that equation doesn't always balance out when all is said and done. For example...how much more will you be out to replace the BSA when the scope takes a dump on you and how much will that scope be worth should you need to sell it to upgrade your optics later on down the road. I can assure you that the SS will hold up better and actually be worth not a whole lot less than what you paid for it if you sell it down the road (take a look at what used SS scopes are selling for in the PX here on the Hide and elsewhere). Furthermore, with the SS, you are not only getting vastly superior optics and features compared to the BSA...you also get a company that will stand behind their products and knows how to take care of customers (not to mention...a Hide sponsor with contact on the forum and with its members on an almost daily basis).

I am currently re-purposing an 16" run & gun upper to a precision role. Next year I'll be getting a dedicated precision gun and this upper will be going back to run & gun.

Once I get my dedicated gun I will be getting a different mid-level optic ($1-1500).

And the good reviews are only for that specific BSA. That one is not built in the same factory as the rest of their line. I believe I heard right here that it is the same factory as the Falcon optics.

New rifle next year = dedicated target?

So is the optic your looking for being sold next year?
Then current AR = close quarters
New rifle = $1-1,500 optic and not what you are looking for as part of this purchase? Are you mounting this scope until you can afford or decide on which more expensive option will take its place?

If you are looking for something you plan on selling within a year I would recommend looking into something that will not only retain its value but be in good demand (between brand name and popular magnifications). Even if BSA has managed to make a respectable model, if your not swapping it to something else, I believe it will be difficult to sell.

Please correct if I have the above wrong, I think I may have what you're looking for confused from the previous posts.

Sorry to have confused you.

Whatever optic I get now will be most likely be going on a .22 trainer after I get my dedicated setup.
And the AR will go back to a red dot as primary optic.

Thats clears things up...
Does that change the criteria you were originally looking for?
My understanding is that you were looking for a sope for hunting at specific distances....
Is this now mainly for target practice?

Couple thoughts:
Fixed 10x is excellent to train with
* parralax adjustment- determine the distances you will be shooting with 22lr (something to think about if that will be its final resting place) fixed parallax distance, minimum setting...
Matching reticle and turrets to train with (if possible)
The scope is a keeper, pick a company with good CS
Standard mil reticle

I'm still firm in my opinion of BSA. i'm not familiar with the model you speak of so I can't comment specifically, but they do not have a good track record.

I have shot to 1K with the SS 3-9, it really is a great optic. I have a pair of the new fixed 10x SS and they are excellent as well.

That said, if economy is your primary concern and your set on mounting THIS optic on a .22 trainer next year then the SS fixed 6 is a really good choice. Next year you can build your dedicated LR rig and top it with any other SS and have matching knobs/reticle, the 6x is plenty of power for 200-300 yard rimfire practice and since it will focus down to 10m you can still shoot fairly close.

The SS16X is the only under $800-900 that I'd personally put any money into. I'm fortunate enough to have gotten to the point that run USO on all my rifles, but love having SS16X as a backup/loaner in the safe. If you poll everyone with variable power scopes that go up to 20X I'd be willing to bet that 15-17X is where most of the shooting is done.
