I have a 2005 Acura RSX Base model manual transmission with a rebuilt title. I was wondering if I decide to trade it in how much will the value be affected? It is a good car with 70,000 miles but I need a truck now and I am sick of the manual trans.

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

Back before they started making them again, I saw RSXs sell for $25k or more, now I'm pretty sure they go for right around $10kish, if you're willing to sell it around ATL, GA, you'll be able to tack on a few thousand more as cars here always go for a premium compared to cars even 50 miles outside the area.

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

I used to buy and sell used cars and we wouldn't even touch them. It affects the value pretty significantly in my experience, but this was out west. Hopefully you have better luck out there.

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

Just bought a nice used vehicle and had been looking for over a year. When I looked at different vehicles over that time frame I would ask if they had a 'clean' title. Several of the salesman said they won't even take a "Salvaged Title" vehicle on trade anymore. Guess they were 'burned' with too many POS that were resurrected and cobbled for the intent of profit only. I know I wouldn't buy one!!! IIRC one dealer said they would take them on trade but at 1/2 of wholesale only irregardless of what condition the vehicle was.

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

As said before it usually reduces the value by at least half. But it is on kind of a sliding scale. The less the value the closer you get to no difference conversely the higher its value the more the reduction in value. In other words a $1,000 car won't lose much value if salvage title.

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

There was a case in WV many years ago were a garage put two wrecked station wagons together, new paint and all the trimmings. This was before salvage titles and one of the reasons we have salvage titles today. Any way this wagon was sold to a family for daily driving, one day going down one of the hills it split in two, just behind the front seat. the three kids in the back didn't stand a chance. Mom and Dad lived and the kids died on the spot. The reason i know is my late father was flying a chopper and saw it just after it stopped. A state trooper singled he needed help and he put down to help.Later i saw pictures. Three kids killed because of no law to prevent this type of work. MM

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

A REBUILT title is given after a vehicle is salvaged from a insurance 'total'. In some states they are illegal to sell, others fine. They do, however, command no real value over a car with a good title. The best place to sell would be the modified car forum and site. Autotrader may allow more hits, and Craigs List link to a modified link would work as well but make sure you disclose the rebuilt title

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

Most people wouldnt touch it with a ten foot pole. You could find a gear head who may have interest in it as a project car pending he finds nothing serious with the vehicle. Personally I wouldn't buy a car with even a small accident on the autocheck or carfax.

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

I bought a volvo 2004 S80 with a salvage title with 15,000 miles in 2005. It now has 138,000 miles with no issues other than normal wear and tear items.

The volvo was totaled due to a flood in the bottom floor of a parking garage. Easy fix....New carpet and seat motors

A vehicle totaled due to a front end impact is a different story.

Why was your vehicle given a rebuilt title?

Do you have before and after photos?

Re: Car with Rebuilt Title

I have had several vehicles with salvage titles, often the cars are originally totaled for minor reasons. If you know the history and damage, it may be just fine.

I bought a 2 year old Ford van that had been stolen and stripped.
My non salvage Acura was in perfect condition, and someone ran a key along the side. As repainting half the car was expensive, the insurance company totaled it.

If it was a 4-door Acura, I would be interested in buying it...

One advantage of such cars is that the DMV does not complain if the declared value, for registration purposes, is low.
