Long story short. Close friends of ours has a son that arrived in Afghanistan not to long ago. I would like to send him a box of good cigars and a bottle of Bourbon. Question is, can I send the Bourbon?

Thanks,
Mark

There are a number of the online cigar shops that send cigar care packages to the troops. If you contact some of them with his APO shipping info, you can probably get a pretty good selection for very cheap sent over here.

I wouldn't bother with sending the booze. For the cigars, make sure he's got a way to store them or else they'll get way too dry. If he's got access to a humidor (we had a few in our office in A-stan), then send the sticks along with some Xicar humidor fluid. If not, then make sure he's got a humidor to store his cigars as well. I've gotten reliable ones for $30 so they don't have to be fancy.

As an aside, I made some of my best friends sitting around firepits in Afghanistan smoking cigars, especially around the firepit at FOB Ghazni. Three of us got together last night in DC for booze, Padrons, and a good meal. Cigars are worth their weight in gold in a place like A-stan because it gives you a chance to process everything that's going on with people that are enduring the same stuff.

After one of our boys was wounded and send home (paralyzed from the waist down) he would go buy a jar of Maraschino cherries, pour the juice out, and replace it with everclear or vodka.

Alcohol does make it over, and there have been some really enterprising ways that it has been shipped BUT if it gets snagged its not the sender on the hook. Watch Full Metal Jacket when Gunny goes off on Pile, that is just a snippet of what the 1stSgt will do to the receiver upon intercept. Any pray the "O's" don't find out about it! So I would stay safe and skip the Bourbon.
