I have been using Hornady Unique case lube and getting along with it very well. I keep it in the garage and it got a little hot in there this summer and I started getting liquid on the top of the lube like it was melting. So I brought it in the house and put it in the frig to cool it off and make it solid again but I stirred it up to get the liquid mixed back into the lube again.

The issue now is that the lube is soft and kind of fluffy I guess so instead of being able to rub your finger on the top of the lube it's too soft and you get a glob of lube. This makes it hard to get on the cases nice and even and I end up with enough to get shoulder dents by the time I run 50 case through. I have a really tight die so they need a good coating of lube but that is a different issue.

Has any body ran into this and have you figured out how to get it back into a harder puck. I have thought about heating it in a double boiler setup and melting it then pouring it back into the plastic tub. But I hesitate.

Sorry for the case lube thread.

from the safety data sheet....in case you opt to do any warming.... please note the melts at 107 F, flash at 260F

probably best to call Hornady, i bet they'll help you out

You can load it into an old style lube pad and thereby have better control of the amount you put on the case. I've used it since before Hornady bought out the mom and pop operation that was marketing it out of their garage in California. In 1990, I found it in a shop in Fairbanks, AK.

The Hornady "Unique" case lube that comes in the white tub is nothing more than run of the mill mink oil...the same shit you waterproof your boots with...and as you pointed out, rather goopy even new.

I chunked mine out 15 years ago and have been using the same can of KIWI mink oil ever since.

Idk I'm no oil specialist but I would think once you mess with the integrity of the make up of an oil it's fairly shot. I suppose you could try to melt it all down but sounds like you can go from prefect to burnt / fireball fairly quickly

Update: Wife left for a while today so I could play in the kitchen. I left this stuff in the original tub and stuck it in the microwave, ran it for 15 seconds and it was just starting to melt, another 15 seconds and it was really starting to melt not real hot though, another 15 seconds and it was 95% liquid almost clear, stirred it slightly. Sat it on the counter and let it cool and it looks better than new. I'll have to size some cases to be sure but it looks like I'm good to go.
Thanks,

Allenone1, when you run out of that stuff try the old lanolin and alcohol mix. It's super cheap and you will have a lifetime supply the first time you buy it.
