Case prep and OAL?

Guys I got the Hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparator. After measuring and coming up with the travel length to the lands I subtract .030 from that number. I then set up a dumby round to test for function in the weapon. I soon discovered that the length was too long for feeding into the magazine. I ended up having to subtract an additional .08 to get proper feeding into the Mag. How much will this effect accuracy and did I waste money on the gauge since it won't be as accurate. Secondly when preping my casings am I better to just neck size or FL? I have the Redding S-type match dies if that helps. I'm looking for the most accurate round that still functions. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Case prep and OAL?

For match shooting I have seperate rounds for slow fire and rapid fire. Slow fire gets hand delivered one at a time. They can be long. For magazine feeding, you have to make them shorter. Good instruments and equipment are never a waste of money. I prefer to think of the money spent on these items as an investment.

Good luck.

Re: Case prep and OAL?

Good point on the investment. I've never really competed although I would like to. I suppose if I were shooting long distance or slow fire that system would work. I appreciate the feed back. Any input on how much accuracy is lost between the shorter ones to the longer?

Re: Case prep and OAL?

I've heard good things about the RE-15 except it burns dirtier. Dirty is fine with me and it seems you save a few bucks. I was wondering about loading different loads for different purposes and adjusting the length accordingly. You've given me some food for thought.
