I'm relatively new to reloading and am doing it on a limited budget. I acquired several pieces used but did "splurge" and bought a new RCBS rotary case trimmer kit. I was using it tonight with a screw chucked into my battery drill when all the sudden it just froze up solid. I have it soaking in some liquid silicone right now. Am I screwed? Will this thing ever work right again? Any suggestions?

Re: Case Trimmer Seized Up

Oh it happened, took it into work with me this morning. Put some heat to it, tapped on it a little with a hammer and freed it up. Gonna clean it up with some 400, and 600 grit sand paper should be good to go after that.

Not completely related, but not exactly off topic...
My forster case trimmer was giving me a lot of resistance while trimming .243 brass. Turned out the pilot was boogered up at the bottom, gave it a few twists with some sand paper and steel wool and the problem went away.

10W30 is your friend. Seriously, that's what I use on my presses and trimmer. I buy by the case for my oil changes and always have some to put in the oil can for my bench.

Are some of you talking about running a trimmer without putting some sort of lube on the pilot?

Really?

Brass will gall on steel, and the faster you run it, as in battery drill powered anything, the worse it will be.

A drip or two of case lube once in a while on the pilot, and the cutter, will not only prevent galling on the pilot, but will give you a cleaner cut with much less burr.
