So I was out at Randys Range shooting some 308 loads and had 4 failures to fire in a row. Shooting 2000 mr .015 off the lands and suddenly this occurred. I checked the last three to make sure that I had actually re-primed the case, and the firing pin mark was just as strong as that showing on my fired cases. Yes they had powder in them and yes my firing pin was striking plenty hard. Tried second firing, even put on in m14er's surgeon, same thing. Last ten rounds fired great. No one could seem to figure it out. Any ideas? I may switch to BR2's, but the LR should be 100% fine. Little lost here and certainly don't want it happening again.

I had that happen with one lot of BR2's: Had eight of 1000 fail to fire for no apparent reason. I thought that I had a gun problem, but it never happened again.
I saw the same thing happen to another competitior at ASC: four of five failures for no apparent reason, with good primer strikes, then it never happened again to him either.
I wouldn't worry about it.

I've found that a lot of FTF issues are due to improper primer 'pre-loading' care, or improper seating depth.
I have only had 3 misfires in my lifetime, and all were due to improper primer seating depth.

The only time I have had a FTF in my bolt guns was because of improper seating depth of the primer

I've never had a CCI primer fail to fire except with a light firing pin. Were your cases damp or wet when your seated the primer? That would be my guess.

Depending on where they were stored, they could have been anywhere from the heat in someone's trunk in the middle of summer, or the cold in the winter.
Primers need to be stored at a constant 55 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit year round. I accomplish this by placing them in an ammo can with a desiccant packet in the bottom of my pantry closet. This is where I also store my wine, so I know it stays around 60 degrees year round there.

Indeed I stock all my powders and primers in a locked cabinet in my cellar/basement next to the reloading bench with a pack of desiccant. 62-64 degrees all year, and I also have a dehumidifier I run down there. I read something about seating depth, and I just visually inspect each seated primer to ensure it has seated at least flush to the rear of the case. If this is wrong I'm all ears to guidance. Otherwise I guess I will chalk it up to a few bad primers, but will certainly try to be more wary moving forward. Hey, got a good little bit of anti-flinch training at least! Pretty sure I passed. Held target and follow through dead on reticle center!

I have probably loaded 3000 rounds all using CCI primers and have never had a failure to fire. I just use the regular primers though, not the benchrest primers.

i also had about 20 of 1000 cci primers that didnt fire.... all 20 were in the same box of 100 and the brick of a 1000... hope it not a trend i got 3 cases>> 15000 of these primmers

When you shoot enough, you will come across primers that will not go bang on the first hit. I've seen all brands FTF, CCI #200, BR-2 and #250, FED 210, 210M, 215M, etc. Most will fire on a second firing pin strike. Just lift the bolt (not to the rear) and lower, and fire again. It could be a light firing pin stike, improper seating depth of the primer, or all factors at the same time. Just know that it happens.

I cleaned my bolt out and tried a separate batch of primers from a buddy with the same result. I switched over to IMR 3040 and Win LR and started uniforming my flash holes. Haven't had a problem since. Wondered now for a while what the problem was because I changed everything not wanting to experiment. Thoughts: primer not hot enough for a bad batch of RL19, or flash hole too small. Too new at this to know much but I can say that since I made these changes I have a 100% reliable load.

That many failures seems highly unlikely that it would be bad primers. One thing very difficult to diagnose is primer seating.
The primer can be set no deep enough (primer is proud) which is the most common and easiest to determine. That usually results in a failure since the FP hitting the primer usually pushes the primer further into the pocket. In extreme cases can potentially result in a slamfire with semiautos.

The primer can be set too deep. This is more difficult and can result in two types of failures:
1) Primer is set too deep and the FP does not have enough reach to provide the shock impact to ignite the priming compound, even though it makes a dent in the cup.
2) Primer is set too deep and the anvil is driven too deep into the primer cake and the cake fractures. That primer is dead.
