Cerakoted Bolts Degrade Smoothness?

Currently have a build going on using a Surgeon 591 and I want to coat it but wondered if the Cerakote slows the bolt down (or degrades the smoothness) due to the thickness of Cerakote? I know I could IONBOND it but was wanting to keep the bolt the same color as the gun, and IONBOND is only black. And any silver coating such as NP3 is out. I would IONBOND it before that.

Can anybody tell me if this is or has ever been a problem with your actions.

I've got the bolt on my Savage coated in Cerakote. I did not coat the bolt lugs, but the raceways are coated. There was a bit of drag at first, but after a hundred cycles of the bolt or so, things smoothed right out. Now it's as smooth and fast as it ever was.

Agreed. Took a bit of manual effort at first but is slick as glass now.

rough for the first few tugs on the bolt....after that it is very very smooth. Lube is your friend!

Yeah I just had mine ceracoated and it was really gritty at first but I worked the ceracoated bolt in the action 20-30 times and it's smooth as silk.

FYI, ionbonding is now available in FDE and Copper colors. The Barrett MRAD is ionbonded in FDE. Talk to Todd at phantom finishings and he should be able to help you out either way you decide to go.

For best results I would recommend going with standard Ionbond. FDE ionbond has a little bit of a metallic sheen to it and is not as hard as the black, but is still a really good finish. On a 591 cerakote will work well. It will wear in a couple of places to get to where it wants to be and then be very smooth, but it does wear on bolts. Another good option is microslick, which is manufactured by the same company that makes cerakote. It is basically their answer to teflon. It is what I run on my own competition rifle. I really like not having to use oil if I don't want to. The only issue is that it only comes in black.

+1 The mircoslick you did on my bolt is nice! It did wear in pretty fast but it's in places that you don't see unless you pull the bolt. The bolt is slick even without oil and its even better with a light coat.

If the Cerakote is thin, which it should be, it will be smooth and feel great.

After 50 cycles or so it smoothens out. I lube my bolt up with gun oil. Then rub it dry if I'm out in the dust. Runs slick as shit.
