Cerakoting Inside of Action

At first its gonna be a little rough and over time it will get pretty smooth, but in my opinion if you want it really smooth your best bet would be to jewel your bolt and keep the inside of your action unpainted

My rifle is currently being dipped and cerakoted. He talked me into doing the bolt, I was a little concerned at first. He let me check out several rifles he had at the shop, they still cycled good. He didn't get up in the actions though.

It depends on the action and how much play/room there is between the bolt and the inside of the action. Properly applied Cerakote is .001-.002" thick. Assuming that only .001" is applied to each surface you have added a total of .004" in thickness. If this is done on a custom action that had minimal bolt/receiver clearance to begin with, then it will be tight and cycle rough. I have felt custom actions with fresh Cerakote that were like this. On a stock Remington 700 action with more clearance to begin with it likely wont be as pronounced. If there is enough room for the added Cerakote thickness to begin with then the action can cycle smooth.

I've had numerous actions cerakoted and the bolts. They are sticky, not rough. Even with a good cure time they are still sticky at first and will bind easier. After you work the bolt a few hundred times it will smooth out and be very smooth.

If you don't want to deal with the stickiness and binding you could follow the advise above or you could also have the bolt and inside parkerized. Parkerizing may be a little rough at first but it will smooth quickly.
