Suppressors CGS mod 9 or rugged obsidian 9

Looking for a 9mm can and these are the two I keep going back to, doesn’t seem like you can go wrong with either. Use will be pistols and sub guns.

Ruggeds modularity is cool but not really sure if I’d ever use it in the K configuration. Maybe once I had it I would but I’d like to hear some experience on both, thanks guys.

I'd avoid CGS... the baffles are all aluminum. Between those two choices Rugged is hands-down the better choice.

The baffles are aluminum because it's a handgun silencer and is meant to balance well on the end of a host and be quiet. The blast baffle is stainless steel, the forward six are aluminum. By keeping all the stainless parts to the rear and all the aluminum parts up front it makes it feel lighter to the shooter than it actually is. Using anodized aluminum for the front baffles allows for additional or extra material to be left on the baffles to create features that aid in sound reduction which otherwise would be removed or reduced with stainless steel because the weight has to be minimized and the only way to do that is to remove material. The MOD 9 is quieter than the Obsidian 9, owners of both have attested to that repeatedly online.

Aluminum baffles aren't even hard to clean. You just coat them in bore butter, welding anti spatter, or a similar viscous non toxic paste prior to shooting and a majority of the fouling will wipe off. Even then baffles should never be spotless, that'd be a waste of time. All you need to do is knock out the large chunks of debris and keep shooting. Or even better, use a soda blaster. As Derek Smith of AAC, Silencer Shop, and SIG says: There have been decades of anodized aluminum silencers and the only thing wrong with them is the internet.

The only things that using 100% stainless steel baffles gets you that could be seen as a benefit are a few additional cleaning methods (ultrasonic, stainless pin tumbler, the dip) and a more full auto capability. With the downsides of being louder, heavier, not as well balanced. You aren't going to wear out either silencer in any normal use. The piston system in the MOD 9 also locks up better, its three lug mount is stronger and more concentric thanks to it's machining processes and it keeps the piston cage cleaner. The MOD 9 is a shorter overall length with both the piston and the three lug mount installed when compared to Rugged's equivalent configurations.

If you have an actual machinegun, or want a few extra cleaning methods, or if you want it to have a small configuration option, then the Obsidian 9.

When you take time to learn about the reasons why one material is used over another it makes perfect sense. Quieter, lighter, and much better balanced. The MOD 9 fits the role it was intended for perfectly.

I have an Obsidian 9 and I'm quite happy with it. I just wish they would crown the (muzzle) end cap. I had it on a 3 lug mount and didn't get it seated properly (entirely my fault). First round launched it downrange and of course, it hit concrete on the side of the front tube. Bent the tube into the recessed end cap. Had to send it back to Rugged for repair. They turned it around the same day and get many kudo's for great C/S. However, if the end cap were crowned to protect the end of the tube, the tube would not have been damaged and it would not have needed to go back to Rugged.

Would I still recommend the Obsidian ? Yes.

I have a Mod 9 and haven't had any issues with it. Sits nice and tight on an SP5 3-lug. Gets lots of rounds through it a fast rate and I can't notice any degradation. I haven't done a side by side between it and anything else but it is quiet; very little FRP. I've never once used it and thought, "I wish I could run it in a smaller configuration."

I give it a thumbs up.

We've found that most people never use the modular length feature anyway. It ends up dedicated to one host and if they want a shorter one for another host they go get a shorter silencer for that other host.

I've about given up trying. The internet commandos have decided. Aluminum bad. I love my Kraken and Form 1 AL baffled can. I also have rimfire cans with SS baffles. There are more ways you can clean stainless. That doesn't make aluminum something to be avoided at all costs. And yeah, I've never once thought I wish my cans could be screwed in half. YMMV

I only have one pistol can currently, the first gen sico octane 45HD. Ideally I’d get one of these (obsidian or mod 9) for strictly pistol duty and a wolfman for sub guns, which is what I was planning anyhow actually.

The Rugged Obsidian 3 lug adapter spring is very strong. You have to insure is seats all the way before twisting into the locked position.

Thanks for that, but oddly enough, since you guys shipped me my Rugged Fixed Barrel spacer a few days ago (and a few pistons), i think i decided not to do 3 lug at this point, i now just need to track down a 5/8x24 Fixed Mount and I will have all I need for my Obsidian 45 your guys are holding

My obsidian 9 is my most useful can.

I use it on my nightstand Glock in k config, my 357 henry shooting 357 at deer and subsonic 38 at steel, my CMMG AR9, and my bolt action 22lr. It's rated for 16" 350 legend too.

I also sometimes use k config on the AR 9- when I do I still wear ears but don't annoy the neighbors.

I did just pickup a yhm R9, just to have an extra dedicated AR9 can- don't need it. Just spoiling myself

Ideally each gun would have it's own.

I can certainly see the modular aspect being useful, nightstand gun duty is a good point. The obsidian and mod9 are both seemingly great I should just get both.

YHM has been killing it with great products at an even better price but they’re worse then TBAC, I never see them in stock anywhere.

Yea the wolfman looks pretty sweet too.

It's nice having at least one user serviceable pistol can around for lead bullets, if you handload those like me.
Actually, subsonic cast lead 38s are probably my favorite round to shoot suppressed, other than rimfire.
Much quieter than 300 blackout, at a fraction of the price.

If you’re looking for a 3-lug option for the Obsidian, you might give the SilencerCo low profile mount a gander. My Rugged 3-lug didn’t play well with my TROS integral 3-lug on my 9mm AR and I had an endcap strike. The SiCo low profile mount fixed that and it fits tight (virtually no wobble) on the SiCo 3-lug I’m putting on my Henry Model X 45-70 that I’m setting up for subs.

I have a second Obsidian 45 and a Wolfman in jail.

I ended up going with the obsidian 9, also ordered a wolfman along with it since I just bought a gen 2 MPX. It’s been an expensive couple days.

The mod 9 is next on my list for pistol silencers. I would’ve bought it too had I not got a wolfman.
