Any of you guys use the UTG [Leapers} bipods on your rigs? Seems like most of them aren't bad for the price, from the evals i'm seeing here and there. Figure they oughtta' at least work off rimfire recoil no problem--

Just bought 3 of them off Amazon, so we'll see.

Also have 6 of the BR-style NC Star bipod. I like them as they're only about $30, and they come with barrel and hollow stock adaptors.

Any other el cheapo options out there i'm missing??

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

I got the Caldwell XLA Bipod Sling Swivel Stud Mount 6" to 9" Black for about $21 from Midway in April. Have it mounted on a Savage Mark II BTV, and it seems fairly solid. Will be trying it out shortly and can give a report then.

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

I use the UTG OP-2 bipod on my Weatherby and Savage, it is actually remarkably stable for a "cheap" bipod, I don't like the swivel stud adapter it comes with though, it is very unstable and flexes a lot. The bipod can also swivel about 20 degrees, which is a great feature. If it can stand up to the heavy recoil of my 300WSM, I have no doubt it can last on a rimfire.

I picked one of these up at academy sports for around $30.
Great piece of gear for the price, I'm thinking it may last much longer than expected.

JMO, unless competing in benchrest sporter class, most of the cheapo bipods that mimic the harris design are ok.

on the other hand, there really is no replacement for a harris, the better construction, materials and finish used are superior to the knock offs.

but the knockoffs mimic the original design, which is pretty solid.

i've noticed too that the knockoffs tend to be a little less solid than the harris, BUT better than nothing at all.

alot of knockoffs are also derived from the airsoft / air rifle crowd and manufacturer's and you can find a ton of different chinese made harris bipod knock offs, just by putting "ebay bipod" in your search engine reveals how many there are out there.

alot of them have less than good quality hardware that attaches the main components and are prone to snapping and such.

but again, unless seriously competing, for just plinking, most of them will be ok and cheap enought to get different heights and a few swivel models for different situations.

would i mount one on a centerfire to go on a $3,000 elk hunt? nope.

i'm not a name brand kinda guy, but when it comes to harris styled bipods and serious shooting off a bipod either in competition or serious hunting (as if there is any other kind), there is no replacement for a harris.

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

I just got a UTG for my ar and could not be happier! $30 it is worth every penny. I have no intentions on competing with it so....... One thing is the rubber feet smell horrible.Had to leave it ouside for a couple days but gtg now.

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

in addition to the cheap bipod thread and Mrbrooks post above, i just noticed ones that are called blackhawks and are actually now at walmart too.

yet another based on the harris design, they have a pivoting (left to right cant for uneven ground) and a panning feature (horizontal movement). additionally they have a pod loc type of gizmo on the back. pretty reasonable priced i can't recall off hand, but economical.

personally IMO the pivot and panning combo add a bit too much of movement, (even though they can locked into a position) basically defeating the purpose of the bipod anyway. love the pivot only for hunting or shooting anywhere else than an established firing line.

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

I had the UTG on a Remington .308 for a year, and it held up fine. It was plenty stable and I never had an issue with it. I think it was $21 from Cheaper Than Dirt. After upgrading to an Atlas, I moved the UTG to a Savage Mk II and it has performed perfectly there too. It's nowhere near as nice as the Atlas, but it definitely does the job.

I have 4 of these (also have Harris). These are exactly like the Harris just 1/2 the price.

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

Agreed,I don't see much of a difference between the UTG and the Harris except the price. I actually prefer how the UTG attaches

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

I'll tell my story, guys teaching me at first said get the harris, not the knockoff. I bought 2 knockoffs that both broke under very normal operations, since then I have bought 3 harris' that I have had longer than the othersand have had no problems. You will be making a smarter move to get the harris, I have atlas too and it's super nice but you can't go wrong with the harris. IT is made with quality

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

I've had the Walmart knockoff(Rockmount I believe), for 6 years on my 10/22.
I'll be honest, it lost a washer & nut that held one of the legs on.........which I just noticed last week! It also lost a roll pin that held one of the rubber feet on. I think I paid $25 for it.

I've fixed the issues with it just by using loctite. I would buy one again, if they were under $40. The money I would save from buying the knockoff over the Harris is a box of ammo

With that being said, are they any companies out there, besides NcStar & Harris, that make a notched version bipod?

Re: Cheap Bipod Thread

my last range trip a friend couldn't get his savage to shoot worth squat. i was spotting for him and decided to watch him instead of his shots, and saw his bi-pod flexing like mad (a caldwell i think). we swapped my harris onto his rifle and low and behold his savage started shooting liek it shoul've.

there are places where you can save a few $, and places you can't. my money will be spent on harris or better from here on out. besides, they're made in the usa, which helps, and hold their resale if you ever need that option.
