Cheek Rest On Mosin Nagant?

This is my '42 Russian Nagant. You can see that the scope sits pretty high. As it is right now I really rest the side of my chin on the cheek weld. I was thinking of putting on a Karsten's cheek rest cause I really don't want to change the stock. But what do you guys think? Has anyone put one on before (if so can I see a pic)? Will it just look retarded? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar issue with a scoped MN91/30. I built up the stock with mouse pads and covered the top with a piece of scrap aluminum. I used duct tape to hold the whole mess together. Then I took a piece of desert camo cloth and used spray adjesive to hold it on. Some krylon would have completed the look, but I stopped there.

The Karsten rest requires holes to be drilled in the stock, tape comes off with no permanent modificattions.

Yeah I've had a couple Karstens. I was thinking maybe I could put one on with some double sided molding tape. Don't know if it will look right though.

This is a Karstens cheek piece that I trimmed a little bit and notched so the bolt can be removed.

I have always wondered why the Russians (or the Finns, for that matter) never had a modification for the stock- like a raised or adjustable cheekrest- for these rifles.

Given that there were "official" sniper models designated for that role, I would have thought that this simple mod would have been done. The drop on the Mosin comb is severe, designed for the open sights. Non-existent cheekweld with the issue scopes of the period.

Obviously, the guys that used them did so well, but I can't help but wonder if/what mods they did in the field...

I don't know an exact answer, but I think at least one of the reasons may be related to use of open sights in case scope fails or damaged in combat or rifle needs to be used at a very close range. Another reason may be related to the need to remove bolt - while it is possible to make a cheekrest configured to make it possible, at least 6"+ is required to easy bolt removal, which makes that extra piece a bit odd in shape, but in reality, it's not really a huge issue...

If you don't want to drill the stock, why not get a stock pack (like a Tac Ops) and pack an inch or two-whatever works- of some high-density foam rubber under it to build it up?

The Soviet did experiment with a few different designs of cheek rest. Here is one mounted on my PEM (repo mount). Very few of the cheekpieces survived the war.

OP - don't know if you've bought anything yet but don't go doing any permanent alteration to the stock until you've looked at these:

I used one of the special order versions on a Mauser M03. It worked great, easy to put on/take off and offered a stable, consistent cheek weld.

They're made to the measurements of your stock and you can specify the height of the comb/pad to suit.

Not "tacticool" perhaps, but a great solution that requires no alteration to the rifle.

Thanks FlightRN, I didn't know that... I was thinking to make an Enfield style wood cheekpiece to screw it to a MN stock but I'll try to make one like Yours. Regards.-

Interesting that the Soviets did actually do something in that regard.

One could always attach that with high-strength velcro, to avoid putting screw holes in the stock.

Yes, the cheek rest you see on my PEM Mosin is a latter design and was obtained from the Central Armed Forces Museum in Moscow. It is an exact copy (the buckel may be a little off) of a setup that was used in the 1930's when the Soviets and Germans were experimenting with different designs. Many early Soviet designs used German optics and mounts.
