Given that there were "official" sniper models designated for that role, I would have thought that this simple mod would have been done. The drop on the Mosin comb is severe, designed for the open sights. Non-existent cheekweld with the issue scopes of the period.
Obviously, the guys that used them did so well, but I can't help but wonder if/what mods they did in the field...

I don't know an exact answer, but I think at least one of the reasons may be related to use of open sights in case scope fails or damaged in combat or rifle needs to be used at a very close range. Another reason may be related to the need to remove bolt - while it is possible to make a cheekrest configured to make it possible, at least 6"+ is required to easy bolt removal, which makes that extra piece a bit odd in shape, but in reality, it's not really a huge issue...
