On a serious note, tons of kids have saved themselves and others by having ready access to a firearm
American Rifleman's Armed Citizen blotter routinely contains SD and HD situations where an older child babysitting a younger sibling during a home invasion attempt had been able to access their parent's gun inside a safe and either ventilate the perp or hold them for the police. Obviously, those children had been trained very well by their parents and possessed the maturity and responsibility required to act in that fashion.

Was home alone after school when I was 12. Some dude came into our back yard and started knocking on and trying to open the downstairs windows. I grabbed dad's S&W 36 that he always kept loaded under his bed. I ran downstairs and burst through the door to the garage just as the guy started kicking the outside garage door from the backyard. I saw his face through the window and he looked pretty shocked. As I started to point the gun at him, he just dropped out of sight below the window and ran back out the side gate. As I was coming out of my adrenaline dump, I realized that I had managed to cock the little S&W when I had entered the garage. It took a while before I had enough control over my nerves to ease that hammer back down.
I knew where that gun was since I was probably eight years old. I knew not to frigging touch it. Dad started taking me shooting when I was three, and I was probably shooting on a monthly basis from five years old on.
Nobody will ever convince me that most kids can't be trained and trusted with a HD weapon.
However, I will say that this is also on a case by case basis as you always have that 10 percent.

Same here. Took several nieces & nephews out to shoot their first shot, one highly functional autistic nephew. Safety first, second and third.
1 round only in the gun.
All did well and shot more up to then. Last to shoot was my autistic nephew. Good kid. When he fired he freaked out waving the little.380 around trying to release it, we were glad only 1 round was in the gun.
The issue was the impulse kick/ noise is a common trigger for autistic kids.

Dad traveled quite a bit when I was young. I was taught to shoot handguns with a s&w 27.
Dad kept that 27 loaded in the closet for such an occasion you mention. Did get woken up one night, thought I heard someone in the house. Went into parents room and quietly woke mom and grabbed the 27. Thankfully, there wasn't anyone in the house...mom didn't throw a fit, was calm and cool. Still can picture that to this day and was the only time I ever "needed" to grab it...
My dad gave my brother and I guns when I was 8-9 and he was 6. I dont recall any lesson other than "dont fuck up" or something along those lines.
Kids had more common sense in the 70s 80s, as we had to make our own choices and figure shit out through trial and error. I dont recall any eyewear, ear protection, or even a simple lesson on a gun safety.
Im pretty sure Dirty Harry, Charles Brosnan, Chuck Norris, and John Rambo taught us everything we needed to know about guns, at least until the middle school started offering a hunters safety course.

best thing you can do for a kid is teach them and guide them. these are but a few pictures. i’ve brought a pile of kids and adults into the fold. two of the three boys are in the military now, and the third is headed there when he graduates.
one of these three is autistic….i wont tell you which one. and there isnt a soft one in the bunch. all three are outstanding young men. and i have mentored some young ladies along the way, and they’ve turned out exceptional as well.
dont give me the “guns damage children” fucking bullshit. what damages children is never telling them “NO”, ignoring them, letting video games teach them morals, and not holding them accountable. oh, and scumbags molesting them….which is more likely to happen if they havent been given the tools to prevent it.
i ought to start a school or summer camp to teach this stuff…. you lucky motherfuckers are getting it for free.

My son is also high functioning autistic. I trust him more than most of my old medics around guns. Taught him at age 9 how to handle them. Now he puts up a lot of competition when we go to the range to shoot the smallest groups.

my kids started on bb guns at 4-5 in the basement, moved onto 22lrs and this past year built their first ARs. Gun safety is being exposed to firearms in a controlled, educated, and respectful manner. My sons can repeat the basic principles of gun safety in their sleep, have zero infatuation with them and look at them as tools (fun tools but still tools). I did it right lol

you do it right, it’s the best job ever. fuck it up, and it’s a nightmare.

Yeah my nephew also knows how to lead 9mm on a Lee Classic Turret Press. Very process-oriented.My son is also high functioning autistic. I trust him more than most of my old medics around guns.
