Choosing a 30 cal for long range shooting

I'm looking at investing in either a new barrel and bolt for an existing rifle to shoot 1000 yards and beyond but caliber choice is where I'm looking for some advice. I can buy a turnkey outfit chambered in 300 WSM with a 1-11 barrel 31" long. Or I can just buy a barrel and have it chambered and fitted to an existing rifle of mine in a 300 WM probably using a 1-10" barrel 28" long.

So between the 300 wsm and the 300 wm which would be suited more for shots beyond 1000 yards and out to one mile?

.300 win. mag. all the way. Have it throated for the heavies 215 berger a 28" barrel and you can reach 2,000 yards. Much cheaper to shoot than a Lapua Mag. and stays with it to a mile. I just ordered one myself from Short Action Customs.

Thanks, that's my cheapest route in all honesty. I already have the dies and I have 200 pcs of RWS brass for the 300 wm.

I just wasn't sure which cartridge out performed the other.

As stated above, stick with the 300WM. The Berger 215's or the 208 amax will be a great bullet for you at distance. My 300WM loves the amax's. I run Norma brass and 79gr of H1000 @ 2915fps from a 25.5" barrel with the 208.

Either will work, I've seen 300wms do great at a mile. But if your setup for the wm already then not a single thing wring with it either. I have one and love it.

300 win mag is probably easier to find brass for than 300 ultramag

I have a 700P in 300 RUM and it is very similar ballistic wise (depending upon what you shoot out of it) to my .338 Lap. There are a few issues with the 300 RUM and that is the service life of the barrel is not that long and most rifles "in a stock platform" are not real heavy so a full day at the range is not the most comfortable experience.

Thanks guys I'll just add another barrel to the rifle I already have. I have redding comp dies for the 300 wm and already have 200 pcs of RWS brass so really it'll be cheaper to go this route. I was just trying to justify another rifle purchase that's already a turn key package.

In a manner of speaking, yes. I shoot 180's in mine and even played with some 150's for a time but when you add it all together (barrel life, cost of reloading components, recoil) the 300 Win is a better option for most, especially if you are just using it to shoot steel plates and paper. I bought one just to have it and shoot it occasionally but its not designed to sit at the range all day and shoot from 9-5. A better comparison for the .300 RUM would be the .338 Lapua but even then, the Lapua does the job better with less equipment abuse that is seen with the .300 RUM. As a hunting round the .300 RUM is great but for routine shooting, maybe not so much

The 300 WinMag choice would be mine too. If you are using a Rem 700, the 3.6" magazine gives you a lot more latitude regarding OAL.

Have you considered the 7mm-08 Rem? Better BC, better Max supersonic range, better wind deflection and less recoil than .300 WM...

The 7mm-08 is great but won't compete with the 300wm running 210 or up bullets.

I shoot a 300wsm and if you weren't already geared up for 300 win mag I would encourage you to go WSM. I love my 300wsm the only time it has left me wanting more is when I get passed 2000 yards. But I have been working with the 220gr Custom Comp that is suppose to be a BC of .69 at my elevation and the approximant muzzle velocity I'm getting it should be super sonic to around 2200 yards.

300 Norma for a repeater or 300 RUM for a single shot. 225,230 or 240's

300 win mag or 300 norma, both cases can handle a 230 berger out of a wyatts box and still feed. 2850-2950 is doable depending on barrel length in the win mag. 3000+ is doable with the norma with a 27"+ barrel.

I run the 215's at 3015 fps out of a 30" Broughton 5c. 1:10 twist. Had it throated long for both the 215 ann 230s. If I'm hunting with it I use the 230 Berger OTM at mag length. 2890 fps with a mild load of Retumbo. Shot a doe at 660 yards with it and she was DRT. I also shoot the 230 hybrids with Retumbo at 2950 fps but I have to single feed.
I basically took a Remington 700 action, had it trued, added a Thruster break, a Jewell hvr, badger 20 moa rail, the barrel, an AICS , and topped it with a Bushnell XRS 4.5x30 34 mm tube.
Shot it at 1330 yards the other week and with a 100 yard zero it was only 10.15 mils to get there. That was with the 215. I LOVE THIS RIFLE !!

Thanks everyone for the input, I purchased a custom 300 WM setup to shoot benchrest. It's a Bat dual port action in a MBR stock with a Lilja 1.350 dia 1-10 x31"
I've ordered a couple hundred 230 and 215 grn match bullets and I just picked up 24# of H1000

I'm getting ready to revisit my 300 WM and stretch the legs as well. Naht tacti-kool, but I should be able to reach out a ways with 208's or 210's. Be sure to post your results.

I have a Rem 700P 300 Win Mag with a 26'' barrel. Did the one mile with 200 grain SMK. I hold a 4 1/2'' group at 1,000 yards. I use Reload 22 powder. And I'm a old man.

With my HD rifles 300 WM, 26" Krieger I get .24 moa at 100 yards and can hold 7.5" groups at 1000 yards with FGGM factory loads. The rifle shoot better than me for sure.

175gr. SMK at 3298fps. Not bad for a stock barrel and a medium weight hunting rig.


I also have a load of 210 SMKs at 3160fps that shoots just as good.
