I have had two, the first one was a Chrony Beta Master, it pissed me so bad I shot it on purpose, then drove over what was left, it was a pain to set up, never gave consistent readings, I replaced it with a CED M2, it's simple to set up, easy to extract the data out of it, push the AVG and it gives average speed, push the ES or SD buttons and ................, should I need another chronograph a PVM-21 will be it.

Just went through the same dilema and ended up with the PVM-21. Yes it is pricey but seems to be worth the investment. Nothing on the market comes close to the set-up time of the Magnetospeed, but cant use it for hand guns........... Oehler is a nice option also but again in the higher price bracket.I guess the easiest answer is based on your available funds vs what type of ammo is to be tested.

My CED M2 likes sunny weather, it has only given problems on cloudy days, the Chrony didn't care about the weather, it was an Obama supporter and never worked.

For the best low priced chronograph the Pro Chrono Digital is easily the one to have. Add the USB Connectivity kit and your laptop becomes the remote control.

If you want one that works day in and day out there is ONLY one to spend your money on and that would be the Oehler 35P. Unfortunatly it's also the most expensive but this is EASILY one of those times when the most expensive unit is the best unit.

I was asked to test a version that would fit on a suppressed rifle. It fit perfectly on two of my rifles, both suppressed & not. It's the best thing since.... You fill in the blank with your favorite.

Much like Bill Clinton "I feel (felt) your pain". Here in the "Upper Left" corner of the US, light is a precious commodity. It shows up in varying amounts based on the cloud cover.
When I purchased a new Chronograph I opted for the IR Sensors. Never had a problem since. Brand is unimportant, if you're experiencing light related problems then make sure any replacement has the IR sensors.
Also, no matter the brand, I would strongly suggest that you pay attention to any electronic interference. One shooter started cussing like mad because the cease fire bell at the range caused his Chrono to just show random numbers until the memory was full. Cell Phones (Smart or Dumb) that are set down next to the control unit can also create some interesting interference. The signals from the sensors are so low level that the control unit needs to have extreme sensitivity. Fluorescent lights, Cell Phones, Surrounding electrical activity like Cell Towers, Radio Stations, Microwave Towers, etc.
Sometimes it isn't the Chronograph as much as it is the environment.

Oehler 35p, it will work in more conditions than most of the others. The only thing that has caused it to screw up is lightning in my experience.

I have the ProChrono and have yet to have a single error. It is my first chrono and after 500 rounds I'm confident I made the right call.
Of course, if you're looking for a more quality/expensive chrono, I'm sure there are better ones out there.

I have a Chrony. It works --when the lighting is just right. I live in Pac NW, so lighting is NEVER right.
They make one now with IR lighting, not supposed to be nearly as finnicky around the clock. Chrony has a lighting upgrade for it now and that is IR I think.
They mention lighting being an issue indoors, but it can be problematic outdoors too.
I'd get one that doesn't use photoelectrics like the Chrony if I were you. There is a better one out there, a really good one, forget the name though. But get that one, and let me know the name when you do.

Last "upgrade" I saw was an Aquarium light mickey mouse piece. Also available was pretty much the same thing only it used LED's.

If you want a chronograph that only works day in and day out the Oehler 35P would be a great choice. But if you want the most reliable, most accurate chronograph that works day AND night under ALL light conditions the PVM-21 is the only choice. Unfortunately the PVM-21 is also the most expensive of the mass produced ballistic chronographs. But the PVM-21's detector system is so reliable and the time base fast enough that it does not need a second channel to validate projectile detection and speed. The PVM-21 is also much more compact, lighter and easier to setup and has the largest usable detector area.

</div></div>I got my MagnetoSpeed a week ago. Really. Why: It's more accurate than a Chrony (sorry) and easier to set up then either my Chrony or Ohler 35p. If all I want is muzzle velocity it's vary fast to setup and use.
Down side, it's attached to the barrel so it will change your POI so shooting the ladder with it attached is problematic. My POI was 1 inch high but very consistent.
If you don't need to shoot through your chronograph as part of your test and only need your speed, it's the best.
I'm adjusting my procedure to shoot foulers of the same load then off it comes for the group.

No, seriously. I take note of your very positive comments in favor of the PVM-21. Personally, I have never even seen one used, at the range, and know absolutely nothing about this unit....except a few informed users have a very favorable opinion.
And, by the way, Oehler is very good about fixing whatever is wrong, I can't say enough about their customer support. BB

Not trying to steal the show here, but what are some good stable options for mounting the PVM-21.... prone vs bench. Trying to decide whether to make a solid base or buy a tripod. By the way, Neco's had a run on the chronos and had to wait for the germans to go back to work!

I'm loving my Magnetospeed for so many reasons...
It is quick to set up, not affected by light, has an intuitive and useful control center, you won't shoot it ( I shot my Pro Chrono 1st time out!),,DOES NOT FORCE A COLD RANGE!...and import flawlessly into Excel for the inner geek in me.
Magnetospeed may not be perfect, but it seems pretty hard to beat.
I'm loving my Magnetospeed for so many reasons...
It is quick to set up, not affected by light, has an intuitive and useful control center, you won't shoot it ( I shot my Pro Chrono 1st time out!),,DOES NOT FORCE A COLD RANGE!...and import flawlessly into Excel for the inner geek in me.

If you are in the L.A. area I shoot at Angeles Shooting Range pretty regularly and I would be happy to show it to you. The Kurzzeit Systems PVM21's IR sensor array is the real breakthrough giving the PVM21 chrono accuracy better than 1/10 of 1% under all sky conditions.
If not for the fact that we looked for an Oehler in 100% condition at a fair price for a year and then Kurzzeit releasing the PVM21 a few years ago I would have an Oehler.

I'm very happy with my 35P though, it does what I want. Occasionally, it has a hard time with Noslers which are generally more highly polished, but that's the only problem I have ever had.
Now, can you compare the PVM21 to the Oehler Ballistic Labratory?
edit: on the few occasions when my machine missed a Nosler, I used a magic marker and end of problem.

As for the OCW ladder test, just shoot it without the chrony, you don't really need the speed for the test it's just extra data. Then after you have your accuracy nodes figured out chrony your load. I didn't have any trouble working up a load with the magnetospeed...

I have an Oehler 35 P which is super accurate, but doesn't work at a local range with a cell tower nearby.
I got the magneto speed and can use it at the indoor range and get good mv and SD. Be careful with the plastic buckle though, mine broke. They sent me a new one right away and said not to torque it so much.

I got the magneto speed and can use it at the indoor range and get good mv and SD. Be careful with the plastic buckle though, mine broke. They sent me a new one right away and said not to torque it so much.

So you have an Oehler that doesn't work well at your home range and a Magneto Speed that many folks seem to have an issue with the mounting system. Man that sucks.

Shot the Magnetospeed today for the first time and shot through the Oehler 35 at the same time.All readings within 11 fps on 4 different rifles, including readings on an M1A with a Coastguard muzzlebrake on it. Love the Magnetospeed. Plus it fits in a drag bag with your rifle if needed! saves a ton of time at the range too! Take your Oehlers and PVM21's and set them on the shelf as backup and buy a Magnetospeed! $250 and done!
