I am almost threw a pound of clays and i was at the store the other day and noticed that 5.5 grain of tight group would send a 230 gr bullet at 900 somthing fps and if i am right i think it took a little more clays then that to get the 230 gr to move that fast. I enjoyed it but looking for to see if their is any thing better or should i just stick with the clays ?

Re: clays or tight group for 45acp

First up, better check your manuals!!!! The 5.5gr of titegroup on the bottle is for a 185gr bullet, NOT a 230! Quickload shows 5.5 to be over max pressure by 3400psi! Showing it would be 1099fps! In other words pretty hot!

Hodgdon's reloading data center shows a max load for a 230gr with titegroup to be 4.8gr at 818fps!

Here are my best groups while doing load workup on a Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail, these are at 25'.

First up is 4.6gr of Titegroup over a 230 FMJ RN:

Next up is 8.1gr of Hodgdons HS-6 over a 230 FMJ RN:

And finally, is 3.8gr of clays over a 230 FMJ RN:

Since these are standard plinking and general shooting rounds, I settled with clays. I can get more charges per pound and with very good accuracy out of my pistol. A side note is while the HS-6 was the most accurate loading from the day, it was over twice the charge, and had very snappy recoil, it wasn't worth the trade off to me for a very slight improvement in accuracy. But if your looking for snappy and hot HS-6 might be worth looking at. YMMV. As always you need to work up loads in YOUR gun!

Re: clays or tight group for 45acp

BigDKC's post is right on, for a 230 gr. bullet, Hodgdon lists 4.8 gr. as the max load. I've loaded a few thousand .45 ACP with 230 gr. jacketed bullets and 4.8 grs. of Hodgdon Titegroup with very good results, fairly clean burning, very accurate. Titegroup loads use the least powder of any that I have used. The downsides I can see are 1) the guys that shoot moly lubed lead or lead bullets say it is hot and causes a lot of smoking with those bullets, and 2) the charge volume is very low so double charges are possible without overflowing the case.

Re: clays or tight group for 45acp

I am almost positive thats what the bottle said but i could be wrong or could have read it to fast.

i would love to try vn powder but again no one around here uses it so i have to stick to the "popular" powders

i think I am going to go with tightgroup unless i can find clays... i like clays and use it in my 308 sub loads so their is 2 birds with one stone but ill know more next week after i get it all set up

You might check you Clays load 4.0 gr is getting warm with a 230gr. and are you speaking about Clays or Universial Clays in your orginal post? I have been shooting clays for years but if I put 5.anything it would disassemble my 1911s.
