Does anybody have an idea for keeping a flash hole deburring tool from clogging? I find that I have to clean my flash hole debur tool after about each 5 cases.
Any ideas?

Thanks, Jim

I have mine in a mini lathe and I have it running one step above the slowest setting. I do run the neck of the casing against the tool and that removes the brass that hangs on. Going slow really helps the most.

Buy the Sinclair flash hole tool. I got tired of jacking around with those other stupid flash hole tools that clog up and give inconsistent cut depths.

Thanks for the help guys. I should have included in the first post that I am using the tool in a drill press. Does that make any difference?

Re: Clogged Flash Hole Deburring Tool

I use mine with a manual handle, and tap the shaft on the edge of the bench occasionally. Works about as well as I need it to.

Besides, I like the hand reaming process; I believe the sense of touch has a genuine value there.

I had a collar slip once with the drill motor and ruined maybe 20-30 cases before I caught it. The flash holes got way oversized, and primer pressure signs got really weird. Those cases could not be made to shoot well.

I wouldn't do that. Mistakes happen really fast at 500RPM. But B7 is pretty soft and machines like Al so if you insist on using a drill press you're just going to have this problem. You could just keep a file card of air hose nearby and hit it after every case.

I use the lyman hand tool (looks like a screwdriver) and it works well but takes forever. Just watch TV while you're doing it.

I like the Sinclair Gen II deburring tool with RCBS pilots. Cuts to a precise debth and stops. The RCBS pilots fit whatever caliber I'm working with.

WOW! I don't think I would ever use a drill press or anything but a hand tool when doing flash holes. All it usually takes is 1 maybe 2 revolutions at best to clean up the flash hole.

Re: Clogged Flash Hole Deburring Tool

There is no problems with a drill press and these tools. With the Gen I or similar I keep a stainless tooth brush and push it up in there to free up the chips every 3 or four cases. Works good.

I do want to investigate the Gen II from Sinclair as they supposedly have included cut outs for the chips.

Cheers,

Re: Clogged Flash Hole Deburring Tool

I have a few deburring tools the one I had that problem with I used to tap the primer end of the brass on it after each pass to knockout the excess. I use a cordless drill though. The others don't have that void for brass to get hung up in. Also it Really doesn't take to much to knockout that burr if there is one.
