Just finished peicing together an AR 223. In search of a scope for target and range with the occasional coyote/varmit. Shot will mostly be 200yds or less.

I've been searching for a bit, and I'm having trouble deciding. Looking for a 1-4 or 1-6x, with illumination. My narrowed down list consist of:

Vortex strike eagle

Burris mtac

SWFA SS (non HD)

sightmark triple duty m4

millet dms

I'd appreciate any input,

We sell more of the of the Vortex Strike Eagles than the Burris MTAC but that may just be marketing?

After using both I would say it comes down to preference in reticle. I'm really liking the direction Burris has been heading since being folded into Beretta Defense group. Their optical quality and the quality of the product overall has grown leaps and bounds over the past 4 or 5 years.

I think you'll be happy with either.

I purchased the SWFA 1-4 when it was on sale around Christmas this year to put on a .223 AR. I've not had a lot of time behind it but have shot 100-250 yards (paper and steel) and used it in low light conditions. For the price I'm very impressed and would have no problem recommending it. I got a chance to shoot my buddies strike eagle and to my surprise I liked the SWFA better, mostly due to the reticle. I think Chris nailed it that it comes down to preference in reticleand you can't go wrong with either.

Might I suggest the new Primary Arms 1-6x Gen 3?

I have used the MTAC 1-4x, XTR2 1-5x, and PST 1-4x. All of them are good, but to this day I still think the Primary Arms is the best value.

The glass quality in each of these options (including the Primary Arms) are better than the Strike Eagle IMO. The Primary it's on par with the MTAC as far as glass goes, but not quite as good as the XTR 2 (but then again, the XTR is easily the most expensive of the bunch). I'm not sure how well it compares with the PST because I've since sold that scope in favor of the XTR 2.

The field of view on the Primary Arms is tied at the top with the XTR 2, but it has more of a fish eye effect, while the XTR is clear edge to edge. Both are better than the PST in FOV though, and most importantly, the Primary Arms is the lightest of all of them at only like 15 or 16 ounces ounces or something like that. Plus, with the new Gen 3, Primary Arms is giving them a lifetime warranty. I'm in the process of picking up another for my 3-gun build when funds allow.

These are just my findings, ymmv.

I'd agree with SuperSneakySniper's post above.

I don't know anyone really happy with their SE. I'd suggest an SWFA or MTAC over a SE. I run a XTRII on my main match .223 and I love it, but that is a big price bump. I do have a few .223 ARs I prefer the 1-4 MTAC on over the XTRII.

I know you said you weren't looking at the HD version of the SWFA but I had one and was very impressed with it. IMO the reticle design was ideal for this type of optic and it was very robust and reliable. I found mine on the sample list for a decent discount and I see them pop up on there on a regular basis.

I do like my Strike Eagle on my .223. For your stated needs, it's one of the good ones that fill the bill. I make solid hits at 300-400 on my AR15 and can shoot both eyes open using the 1x illuminated center for close quarters engagement.

Well after some of your comments and some more searching. Seems the strike eagle, mtac, and SWFA are all about on the same par with the only difference being the reticle, I think I've settled on the Mtac. That's for all the input
