I thought I knew how to clean a Winchester! A few months back I came across my 2nd Mod 70 Target in 30-06, I gave it a quick clean and wipe thru with Corrosion X and checked the chamber, bore in the sunlight, beautiful bright and shiny. The gun is a '54 vintage and is in good 95+% shape, all original, non CMP and I can tell it was not shot a lot as original owner said. long story short I put in to really clean it today and patches keep coming green, I can tell looking in the muzzle that there seems to be a thin copper color that will not brush out! What cleaner do you folks recommend to get any and all copper out of an old CM barrel. The chamber ,lands and groves look new! I'm thinking the copper was never taken completely out from day one on. thanks The ole gal shoots like a house afire even with cheap Super X ammo I zeroed scope with, shot a couple sub 1/2 moa with Fed GM 168 gr ammo and some 180 gr hunting ammo thanks

Re: CM barrel copper cleaning advise

If it shoots as you say-its clean enough.

You can try one of the stronger products like Sweets 7.62 or Shooter's Choice. Or even Wipe Out foam. Chances are its not going to shot as well as it does now-UNTIL YOU PUT THE COPPER BACK into the bore.

More barrels are ruined by cleaning than shooting.

LOL, I just hate to see that copper color sheen down the muzzel, I was using old #9 and birchwood bore scrubber, nylon brush, bronze brush, 59 patches, corrosion X and marvel mystery oil. Ditto on cleaning, I had an old 2nd year tang safety 77V in Swift that took 8 or 9 shots to season after a real cleaning. Douglas made the barrels back then and this thing wopuld send em all to the house with damn near anything you put in her except the old yellow box super X at 4110. Hornady came out with a 55gr custom load that was killer, I bought a case from lock stock and barrel, sold her to a guy in NM to finance a '57 Win Varminter in Swift that will shoot its pet ammo as well but not just anything you poke in her like the 77V . I want to do no harm just thought I better clean to the core once. thanks

sweet's 7.62, remove the copper to see what's under it, older rifle maybe corrosion????. If there is you want to stop it.

It will re-coat in 10-20 rounds or less.

Never use a bronze brush unless absolutely necessary. Cleaners today have almost eliminated the need for them.

Re: CM barrel copper cleaning advise

I personally like shooter's choice followed by sweets and then follow up with shooter's choice to get the sweets out. It seems to work well. I will say this though, I know a guy that had a filthy 700 with a shilen barrel and decided that to really clean it he should pour the entire barrel full of sweets and cork the end and let it set. Needless to say, when the guy came back two days later, the sweets had done such a good "cleaning" job that it had eaten the rifling out of the barrel.

Re: CM barrel copper cleaning advise

This mod 70 target I have worked and traded many guns to obtain,I want to do no harm. Ive mounted it in a '49 sporter stock and put an Unertl ultra varmint on top. It is my 'Carlos Hathcock' deer stand, bean patch whitetail hammer. I am amazed at the 100-200 yard accuracy. After any bore solvent I run a wet patch of Corrosion X after a patch of Marvel Mystery oil to leave a coating that I will dry patch out before shooting. I think I have some foaming bore cleaner or can pick some up, sweets or shooters choice Ill have to order, I need some Kroil as well. thanks

Re: CM barrel copper cleaning advise

Sweets with LOTS of oil to get it out after you're done with it. I make absolutely sure the Sweets is gone from my barrel when I'm done using it. I learned the hard way. Luckily I was able to bring my barrel back but I though I was out several hundred bucks for awhile.

Re: CM barrel copper cleaning advise

Don't worry about it. Chances are you will wreck the barrel before you make it shine. Clean off the dirt and keep it oiled. That will do you better than anything. I am not kiddn, cleaning barrels wrecks barrels. Only do it if it NEEDS it.
