I bought a barrelled action from the CMP. I bought a replacement bolt from Pacific Tool and Gauge (PTG). I had it installed/built/headspaced by a reputable smith. I was firing Federal ammo, and every other shell casing failed to extract (FTE). I will try different ammo next time out. Is there a different extractor I should be looking at, like an OEM Remington one? The extractor "looks" fine, but I don't really know what to look for, other than a bur, etc. PTG said to send the bolt back. I don't want it replaced, before it is diagnosed as to what is wrong. The bolt is already headspaced for the action. Any ideas?

Have you put a fired case into the chamber and see how hard it is to get out with either a cleaning rod or hooking something under the rim??? Just wondering if there is a chamber issue? Does a live round extract with no issues?

Would have to dig one out but think the Kiff extractor design is identical to OEM?

I also got a barreled action, but it was complete. I also had extraction issues early on. seems like the cheaper high velocity ammo almost always had FTE. my subsonic ammo almost never FTE.

also, maybe put a chamber brush through it. might clean up some rust/fouling that's been accumulating through the years.

regards,
DT

Had one from PTG that was short. The extractor was short by a few thousands and it would not extract period. I still have it. Think it was just a anomoly however. Never had another from Dave like that. Just picked up another bolt from the with a B Model handle that is skeletonized. Very nice work!
I would look at the extractor and check the edge of your chamber for a burr. Some folks do not know that the firing pin comes from PTG long and must be fitted and shaved properly or it will ping the egde of yer new chamber! Look closely and see if this what happened.

I had the same problem, not extracting. Also had FTF problems. Ended up getting a Rock Creek blank and had it re-chambered. The 22lr gunsmith, Brian Voelker, told me he had to do some work/file on the extractor to get it to work properly. As Smag stated, the firing pin on my bolt was too long, that was taken care of well.

I was a bit frustrated with the PT&G bolt at first, thought it would be a drop in, check headspace and fire. Re-chambering was not the path I thought I would be taking when I bought it, in the end I have a very accurate rifle that will go for years. Glad PT&G is offering replacement bolts, even though they may need some work.

KU is correct. When you get the bolt from PTG it states in the box. Must be fitted by qualified personnel. The pins are long for the very reason that actons, barrel tenons are not all the same. Remington some times had the barrel tenon bottomed out all the way forward. On others it was just snug on the lug and not bottomed out. You can see if you look at the lug recesses in the rear how lock up differs from one rifle to the next. This is why CMP sold plenty actions without bolts! One will not fit much less head space in another. Some will fit others and often teams would get them mixed matched. The ones I have seen (early ones) that have matching bolt were ones that the barrel was bottomed out and other bolts were not able to fit. So, they ended up getting the right bolt back to that rifle after cleaning.

Bolts in 40x's are certainly not plug and Play.

Re: CMP 40X Barrelled action FTE

If your chamber is peened at the top where the pin hits it, you can get something called a "chamber iron" for .22's that will push that deformity back out. I needed to do this myself, and it works great.

Also, match grade .22lr ammo that is softlead will engrave itself in the lands when you chamber them, so removing unfired rounds can be tricky too. FYI.
