I am looking at coating options for a Defiant Deviant action. What is the common wisdom here to consider when looking coat a custom action? What is working best for people? Obviously want the action to be slick and provide adequate corrosion resistance. Are there combinations that work, like nitriding an action and DLC’ng the bolt? What are your thoughts?

Nitride isnt a coating, it’s a surface hardening treatment that involves very high heat. So unless the receiver was designed with nitriding in mind, it would be unsafe to do so. It only comes in black color. DLC is a coating that is applied at fairly low temp. It’s very slick, very hard, very thin, and very durable. if it’s applied improperly, or there’s something wrong with the base metal, it can chip. it only comes in a handful of colors.

Cerakote is just durable paint. Comes in a wide array of colors, and overall quality is heavily dependent on the quality of the application.

What are you doing and what have you found success with in your rifles? Any vendor here on The Hide you’d recommend for coating services?

Something you may not know about cerakote, the item needs to be blasted with aluminum oxide before coating. It creates small fissures in the metal, which the coating can adhere to. It makes the item fairly rough. I personally won’t coat anything that is bearing surface. Exterior surfaces only.
