Rapid rod bit the dust today. (2nd time). Looking for something for the pack(range and hunting). Anything better than what I had?

I’ll agree with what your saying. Looking for something that folds up a little bit smaller than that. Rapid rod is about 5” when stowed. Looking to see if there is something better or just get another one.

Ok...curious as to why you need a cleaning rod for hunting. If for range day...any old cleaning rod will do...but for hunting you want something small and compact. When I go shoot coyotes and hogs....I always have a clean and unused BoreSnake in the pack. If you need something for piece of mind for slipping in the mud and getting an obstruction in your barrel....I've always used old milsurp Enfield Rifle Muzzle Covers....I think I got like 5 years ago for a dollar a piece at the Army/Navy store and they weigh almost nothing.

What b2lee said: what is the out-hunting use case for a cleaning rod? I too carry a bore snake, am I missing something? Mud blocking the bore? Knocking out a stuck case in the field?

I've been using weed-eater cord and VFG felt cleaning pellets in my range kit for a few years. The cord and a small hand-full of pellets pack into a zip-lock sandwich bag.

Cut a length of round .080 cord that's about a foot longer than your barrel, melt one end and flatten it so that it will stop the pellet when you string it onto the cord. Wet the pellet with solvent, feed the cord into the chamber and pull it through to the muzzle. Finish by pulling a dry pellet through your bore. Brownell's sells the VFG pellets in various caliber diameters here. For a photo of a length of weeder cord modified for this purpose go to post #13 here.

Yes on the mud/obstruction/stuck case. Never had an issue but I don't want one either. I like the shooters tools kit. I'll look into muzzle covers as well.

This. Don't get ate up about it being too long or having too many sections. It comes in a neat little plastic box package and you won't save any space breaking it down.

The rod plus a BTK live in my range bag. It takes up the same about of space as four snickers bars and leaves you prepared for pretty much any field repair or adjustment.

This is an interesting SH thread from the past, related to your question:

BTW, and as far as I know, nobody ever complained that polished Pro-Shot stainless steel sectional cleaning rods destroyed barrels of their firearms, which probably explains why Pro-Shot keeps making and selling these rods for God knows how long...

This rod kit saved my ass this weekend when I had a squib load on my AR. Testing some loads and as vigilant as I am, I somehow missed one. The Borka kit came out and that little rod made short work of driving the round out. If you spring for the whole kit you’ll be glad you did. Pricy but well made and worth every cent.

Contact Pro shot and get some of these screw together rod sections. Seamless joins,
have run them for a few years zero issues. Saved me from a bad primer squib easily.
Setup your kit your own way, I always carry them in the field in different pouches,
depending on length of time away.

The tier one version of a multi-section rod/kit is the SAIN DEFENSE.
True industrial / mil grade hard use item. Not lightweight. Not cheap.

They are offered in 5.56 and .308 (maybe 6.5 coming). Super rigid.
Designed with brass or bronze rings to keep metal away from bore.

Mile High carries them.

I keep one in my gear and they invariably get used in every class by somebody.

Muzzle condoms, not kidding. I've used 'em on black powder rifles in bad weather and they work,.

For pushing things out, I carry a coil of the heaviest string trimmer line I can find. Thinner line, with a loop, makes a good pull through patch carrier.

I also carry a paint can opener, makes for an Ideal emergency extractor.
