I am looking for a compact and tough pair of binoculars in the 7-8x range with some form of rangefinding reticle. The only option that I have even found so far is what seems to be a civilian version of the M-24 binoculars manufactured by Weems and Plath. I have seen Surplus type M-24 binoculars, but I am very hesitant to buy a pair of binoculars that countless soldiers have had their dick-beaters on.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

I think that you would find more info on this if you had posted in the observation thread under "scopes".

In the mean time this looks like something that you could use although I don't know if they would be considered compact and the magnification is a little higher than you're looking for.

Although not binoculars this may also be of some interest to you....

Thanks for the links. I actually saw those IORs in another thread somewhere. They look awesome, but a big larger and heavier than I am looking for. I also considered the Leupold 10x50 with the TMR reticle, especially since I can get them with a nice .mil discount.

Re: Compact "Tactical" Binoculars?

Vortex isn't a manufacturer I have much info on. Anybody know where these optics are made? I originally thought they made nothing but cheap airsoft equipment, but at those prices, they had better be made by somebody who can afford to eat 3 meals a day....

Re: Compact "Tactical" Binoculars?

I'm pretty sure that they are made in Japan. I will say thay I have a set of Vortex optics "Fury 8x32" binoculars and I love them. When I purchased them I compared the glass to more expensive Nikon, Leupold, and bushnell models and the Vortex looked the best to my eyes.

Vortex has since opened up to the tactical market and from everything I've read people are for the most part pleased with thier products. Use the seach engine in my sig line to look up the Vortex razor line of scopes to see what I'm talking about.

Finally, they have one of the best warranties in the industry. No questions asked for the life of the product, you don't even need to be the original owner.

In stead of binoculars I carry a Leopold RX 1200 range finder. 8 power. It does everything binoculars do, plus the range finder. Its lighter then any 8X binoculars I've ever had. I like going light.

I agree with this, only mine is a Bushnell 1500. Works well enough.

Northrop Grumman M-24 Army issue binos. Other companies make them but mine are Northrop Grumman. I love 'em.
Here's what the reticle looks like. Sorry for the low quality, the pictures were shot with a camera phone. The pictures don't do them justice.

+1 for Steiner military !
I have a set, they are as clear as as my shooting partners Saro's.
But, they have the ranging M24 rectical.
And are tuff as nails!

That's just my experience!

My $0.02

Used the M24's in the Army and never did like the glass or clarity.

The Steiner's are anything but compact or lightweight.

Re: Compact "Tactical" Binoculars?

You need to watch out when buying the military binos for ranging, specifically the M-24. Their mil increments are figured for the artillery version 6400 milliradians per circle, not the true 6283.2, and it will definitely throw you off downrange. Great for adjusting fire with arty and mortars, not so much when using them in conjunction with your mil/mil rifle scope or the formulas associated with them.

Steiner SUMR reticle, Vortex R/T, IOR MP-8 and Leupold TMR are all GTG.
