I am looking for a good conceal carry pistol. Actually more a mix between a conceal carry and just regular holster/carry gun. I am thinking about a mid size Glock. Something that is not to small that it sucks to shoot it... but small enough to conceal pretty easy with a coat/jacket.. and easy to carry in holster. In the mean time I will work on getting my CCW permit.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

I hope to stay under $600. I had a 1911 Springfield Loaded 45 that I traded. It was a great gun but too heavy for carry. I love a good 1911. They are awesome guns and shoot very well. Actually it was my only pistol I have ever owned. I mainly shoot long range but want to get a pistol for my truck and personal protection. The 1911 served its purpose but hated have such an expensive gun for a truck gun and it was pretty heavy when carrying it to go hunting and walking in the woods.

I am thinking Glock 23 in 40 caliber right now.. Not too small but not too big..

+1. Glock 26 or 23. I use a 26 because I already use a 17. A 23 would work great.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

My daily carry is the Springfield XD in .45 cal 4 in barrel. Love that gun; my wife's daily carry is the XD sub-compact in the .40 it is great for daily carry as well, specially with the high cap mag in.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

The sub-compact Glocks are nice and a great choice. I carry a Kahr PM40. It goes everywhere with me. It is a single stack 40 cal, so it is thinner and lighter than a Glock. The Glocks are double stack (carry more rounds), thicker, and weigh more fully loaded. I find it easier to conceal my Kahr, and would rather take it than my Glock for this reason. The Glocks do get a little more in the way and print through easier. Either pistol is a good choice, though.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

Like Chad I also have a Kahr although the pm45. This packs so small you will forget you have it on you. Surprinsingly accurate for a 3 1/4 barrel. If your going to carry all the time dont burden yourself with bulk.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

Being a die-hard HK fanboy I always recommend them. However, the Springfield XD-m packages are pretty hard to beat. Comes with everything you need for at or around 500 bucks.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

For a CCW get a little plastic gun; glock, uspc, xd, m&p, etc. are all pretty good bets. For practicality I'd have to lean torwards the pistol that has the most parts/service avaliability and also the least expensive to purchase/replace.

Probably a toss-up between a used glock, the s&w m&p, or the springfield xd. You'd feel real sore if you 'misplaced' or 'damaged' a thousand dollar pistol...the ccw isn't 'safe-queen' status its your daily burden..think expendable personal items like sneakers, cell phones, and sunglasses..they don't last when you beat on em everyday.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

HK P7psp might surface for your budget (found mine for $550)....Walther PPK in the 7+1 is small but still seemingly reasonable for a pm at the range.
I don't know much about the plastic guns...the Kahrs seem really nice and am glad to see people above endorsing them....may have to try some plastic!

I am hearing that you want an accurate reliable pistol that you can build confidence with, enjoy using for practice and/or matches, and one that will help you develop your marksmanship skills. The Glock 19 and 23 are excellent all-arounders. So is a good quality Commander-length 1911.

Take a look at the Sig P250.
If you don't like the size you can change it.
The trigger group contains the serial number, the rest of the parts are interchangeable. Full-size, compact, and sub-compact frames are each available in small, medium, and large sizes.
The slides, barrels, and mags can be switched out as well......9mm, 357sig, 40, 45.

You can change frames by removing the takedown pin....take a few seconds.
Thr trigger group just pops out and back in.

It can become any of those with non-ffl parts swap. Last I checked, frames are $50.00.
I have over 1100 rounds through my 9mm compact without a single falure to feed, fire, or extract.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

Finally a sig recommendation, so I'll jump on the bandwagon, but with a different model: the 239. I have a P239 SAS .40 for carry and I really like it.
SigP239SAS.JPG

<span style="font-size: 8pt">(Shooting not mine unfortunately. Photo borrowed from wikipedia.)</span>

The SAS is "melted" so no edges or surfaces to snag on clothing. Kinda ugly, but very manageable and accurate for a smaller pistol. Love the short trigger on it too. Despite its size, it's still fun to shoot at the range. (Not so for my summer carry, which is a little KelTec P3AT in a pocket holster.)

Few notes on other models mentioned above:

In a 1911 carry, check out a Kimber. Don't know that they will match your price, but the Carry and Ultra-Carry (3" barrel) are quite nice.

As for Kahrs, I tried a few and owned the 40 for a little while but I had too many stovepipes and failures to eject to ever get comfortable with them. Perhaps I got a lemon, fed it bad food or it was just me, but the two I handled, including the one I bought, were awfully finicky. Don't let me turn you off with a post, but, if you consider a Kahr, make sure you get out and shoot it before buying. The two I handled were awfully finicky.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

since no one else has said it i will. find a place you can shoot every gun your considering , even if you have to rent them .it will be money well spent . find one that feels comfortable in your hand . lots of good guns mentioned in your price range . try before you buy .

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

264win has the right idea.
What I think is the best carry pistol does you no good. Find what you like, then research that pistol's reliability and potential issues-if its still good, get it.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

I have a Glock 23 and I love it. I initially bought it for a concealed carry gun, but then decided its a little to bulky for everyday carry and designated it my truck gun. I am about to buy a Ruger LCP, which is a small .380 auto for my conceal because it even fits in your pocket comfortably. If you dont like the idea of the .380 autos, then i would consider a Kahr. My friend recently bought one and they are much thinner than say a glock or xd and come in .40 and 9mm but they also hold less rounds though. Just hold all the guns you have in mind (or even shoot) and find which one works for YOU best. Just my thoughts..

i love my custom 45s (Baers), but as far as a handgun to bet my life on (reliability, firepower, i.e., for actually use in a HG firefight) I say a Glock 9. get the frame size you prefer, and a pile of Glock factory mags (and don't forget to pick up some 33rd mags while you can)

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

Glock 19 or 23. The XD's shoot great, but the grip is too little. I have average sized hands and when I shoot an XD my trigger finger fits 2 digets into the trigger guard.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

I own my own retail business and carry a LCP in a Desantis holster in my back pocket all day everyday....I have other firearms stationed in other places...The .380 isn't known for it's stopping power but a wise man once told me that "the best gun to carry is the one that you will actually carry everyday." I have it in hopes of making a good first shot or at a minimum to allow me time to put my opposition in to their own OODA loop and buy me time to fall back to a better position and reasses my options..

I am 5'10" and 165 lbs...fairly lean. I am prone to working in jeans and T-shirts and there is no way I could comfortably conceal a Commander length 1911 (although I love them)...so in the winter months when I am more likely to wear a sweat shirt or light jacket in the shop...a G27 is usually nearby....but the LCP gets alot of use during the flip flop seasons we have down here in GA...

what ever you carry....shoot the shit out of it and practice getting it out of where ever you have it....practice, practice, practice....

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

2nd the Sig 239
I run the 9mm SAS model with the DAK and absolutely love it for year round carry.

As others have said, the best carry gun is one that you will actually carry.
Caliber & Asthetics are secondary to this.

One thing to keep in mind is a small S&W J frame or even one of the new Ruger plastic revolvers.

There is alot of advantages to using a wheel gun for carry.
I would recomend that you take a look at these videos:
http://www.downrange.tv/videos/ccw-demystified.htm
The part IV video "Why the snubby is still relavent" is peticularly interesting.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

Walther PPS. I carry the 9mm version every day. Make sure you use the 7 rnd magazines, as the 6 rounders are flush with the frame and make my little pinky dangle in midair. My brother bought the 40 version and it is very nice also. Super easy to conceal.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

This sort of depends on your size, climate, and carry plan. If you are a bigger guy a mid-size should work out fine (Glock 19/23). However if you are average size or smaller frame you'll probably find yourself leaving the gun in your car/truck more than you'd planned to. If you really plan to get something to carry on a regular basis find something smaller than you think you want and thin (think single stack).

After you make your purchase and get your permit get to some IDPA (or similar) events or a BUG match or two for practice.

Also, there is a good chance you are going to end up with 2-3 pistols so make room in your budget.

My two cents.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

A match is not practice for self defense shooting, especially not if the stages are limited to 18 rounds.

I carried my Glock 19 today and it's a joy to carry.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

Right now I am thinking Glock 19. The 9mm ammo is easy to find and cheaper. It should not be too hard to conceal since I am around 235lb. Thanks for all the help and ideas... I hope to rent a few this coming week and give them at try.

Re: Conceal Carry pistol recommendations?

Agreed. But the point is to do more than shoot static targets at 7-10 yards in perfect conditions. A match presents you with the opportunity to have to draw from concealment, reload during the engagement, change shooting positions, and engage multiple/moving targets in a semi-stressful environment (depending on how many cops and prior service guys are waiting to give you hell about how you missed the head shot at 4 yards but managed to clear a malfunction and reengage the remaining 10+ yard targets without missing a beat).

If you shoot your normal carry rig wearing clothes you'd normally wear at minimum you get some better practice than what is required for the permit.
