I am in the market for a holster I can use when running. It will be for my S&W M&P 340. Does any body have a great holster they could recommend? Thanks.

Most guys I know go with some form of chest rig type holster for running. Survival Sheath Systems a really nice low profile rig that conceals well under light clothing. I use a Hill People Gear chest rig when I run. The Hill People Gear chest rig/bag is kinda dorky looking but it doesn't scream gun(it just whispers gun!).

If you prefer a fanny pack type rig. Eagle Industries makes(or made) a Runner specific fanny pack that was made for the small S&W snubs. It's made to hold an ipod, phone and a snub-gun. I can't find it on Eagle's site but here's a link to pics: Eagle Runners pack

I've also seen THIS used by someone in the personal protection field but never got a chance to ask him how he liked it.

I haven't looked at any chest rigs. Thank you for the input. I was looking at the PistolWear.com holsters, but I wasn't sure of their quality and level of retainment.

Natchez had the Eagle runner's packs for around $20. I got one and have used a couple of times, works well.

I quit running when I left the Marines a long time ago, but it seems to me the fanny style of totes would bounce around. Kind of like running with a cartridge belt and a canteen.

Something like the Kangaroo Carry might work too. They have a few different sizes depending on the needs.

If you can somehow wear a belt or dont mind an inside the pants type holster- raven concealment holsters are amazing.... I have one for my HK USP compact and my glock 17- and I have run - not far with these guns in those holsters and they are held in place very well. and they hold them so snug to your body that they dont print and people dont see your gun either....

Thanks for all the input. I do agree with MPB I think a fanny pack would bounce like a "War Belt with two Water Bowls on it". I also believe a young man with a fanny pack screams GUN!

For a while it was popular in area for off duty officers to carry fanny packs. They obviously did not pay attention to the 'officer survival' part of their training. Bad guy only needs to find the young men, with high-and-tight haircut, carrying a belly bag with what looks like a brick in it ......... They were easy to spot. To me carrying concealed - means that the firearm is not evident on a visual examination of the carrier. Pat down would be needed to reveal the FA. It should not be visual to even a seasoned pro (either good guy or bad guy)

I use some 100mph tape and just stick my P32 to my skin.. pull it off quick and it won't hurt.

All kidding aside, a light fanny pack is the way to go.. even though they are ass ugly. Something the belt/pack are the same width or padded so that it doesn't bounce around (if that makes sense).

I too have considered a holster to use while on a run (presumably in gym shorts and not something with a belt)

The only thing I could think of would be a belly band style holster - possibly with some type of snap or retention for the weapon.

Then again, the cheapo belly band holster i got has a tendency to ride up and chaff my stomach (and I'm not the least bit fat).

So I dont have a solid answer to your question, but you might wanna consider a belly band holster.

I use Hill People Gear chest pack also....not specifically for running but for riding the horse...backpacking....hunting. It is secure in how it fits and looks like any bag a granola would be using.

I never thought about running with mine. I don't wear much when running, so I'd have to figure out a way to keep it from bouncing around while keeping my speed up.

The fanny pack idea is ancient. Even my dad stopped carrying his around with him (but leaves it in his car).

I'm gonna put some ideas together on this one...

Anybody try running with smaller pistols like the Kel-Tec p32, Ruger LCP, etc IWB on a belt clip?

I do not yet carry concealed, but...I run about 3 times a week and I carry my Benchmade Griptillian (mid-size, 4 oz folder) clipped inside the waistband of my wind pants in the center of my back and have often wondered if an LCP or similar sized pistol would be reasonably comfortable if carried the same way.

Just another thought for your consideration.

I've seen the Safepacker line by Wilderness (they make the instructor belts) recommended, I haven't used one myself. I have used a cheap commercial fanny pack occasionally, it actually worked ok, less bounce if moved to one side. The Eagle looks like a decent option, I don't really care if I look armed, I just run at night and want to carry something. I've also heard of people using a belly band and one girl I know just clips a Keltec in her sports bra. Might work if you have moobs. Whatever you use you will have to oil regularly.

I don't carry while running. I want to carry my S&W M&P 340. I don't want a leather holster and I wont be wearing a belt with athletic shorts. I have been looking at a smaller pistol recently. I kinda like the Kahr 380 for its size and weight. Matt284 no luck on the moobs lol.

My wife who is 110 lbs soking wet and consistantly runs in marathons. She has a S&w 642 that she will run with in a small neoprine disc man case or a runners pouch. it stays tight and doesnt seem to bother her.

Sometimes I do carry when running. On longer runs my path goes through some shady areas and I got a Kel Tec P3AT for this purpose. I added a clip-draw side belt clip and overall I have been satisfied with this setup. The gun is small, relatively light, and running with this gun is do-able but takes a little getting used to. Running shorts need a draw string though as the weight will pull and can show your ass without it. I usually have an amphipod type fuel belt though, which I can tuck the clip in and it conceals the weapon as much as needed. If you stop running though, it is somewhat visible, but no-one is usually paying enough attention to care. A problem with running with this setup though is that I'm having to clean the gun quite a bit because my sweat leads to rusting on the weapon. Also, it rubs your skin and can cause a rash from the metal surface and any oils present, so its best to do with the belt and not in my shorts. I can post pics of the gun and setup when running if you want...

if you feel that you need to be carrying while running, who cares if it screams gun...if you're concerned about advertising, run on a treadmill...the idea is survival, not being so low key that you're worried about printing...if you decide to carry, then wear the gun in a fashion that will be comfortable, but affords you the ability to draw it efficiently when needed...let's face it, if you're running with a gun, it's not like you're training to win a race, you're more likely doing it to stay fit...my $.02...

i forgot to add that i've used thunderwear before and buttpack style holsters while jogging, it sure was uncomfortable...i've also done limited jogging with a cross draw chest rig and ankle holsters...all WILL take some getting used to...if comfort and concealability are what you're looking for, i would say to jog in safe places or indoors...

If wearing a belt is an option the DeSantis SkyCop is a good option. I have one for my 642 and my 1911. Shirt tail out and they are invisible.

Best way is to get a runners belt like the one pictured on clearance somewhere and take it to a seamstress and have it modified. Your local suit stores will do it and won't have any problem with the intent of your modifications.

Slickest rig I saw used an added compartment that had a thin kydex backer with internal magnet/s molded in all covered in loop velcro. Small jframes or subcompact glocks fit perfectly and were retained by the magnet/s. The use of magnets allowed the angle of retention to be infinitely adjusted by the user depending on running style and how the rig hung on them or if they had a full water load out or empty. No actual holster completely reduced width and allowed reconfiguring on the fly. Pouch was open on the top with two plastic rods inserted into the seams. Basically the rods were sewn in and kept the top closed by stretching the material like a bow string. Yet you could slip your hand in and out effortlessly and fast.

Most of these options discussed require running half a block before a draw can even be executed. This rig was blindingly fast and secure up until a certain weapon weight as determined by the number and location of the magnets.

All total, $150 or so including the host. The guy I know who wears it has no problem doing group runs and hanging out before and after in groups of people all up close without ANY having a clue.

Look at the picture.

The trick is to use the water bottle to mask the extra width. It will also stabilize the weight.
Make the zip pocket non functional.
Add a second seam up top that looks like cord trim and open it up from underneath the water bottle left.

my first thought i have to admit is open carry. maybe some locales dont allow this but train like you fight to me dictates a biathlon sling a 12 pound savage with plugger pouch-stockpack affixed, 550 cord banana hammock and favorite colored pair of crocs.

but if yall insist on reliving the 80's, cut yer hair all gumbytastic like vanilla ice and wear the fanny pack. but youll find it rides better if worn cross drawlike on yer chest not on yer hips where it bounces into yer junk.

I run with my glock 19 in a Smart-Carry / Thunderwear and it works well for me. I rotate it around and away from my crotch so it almost hangs off my hip at 4:30-5:00 position to protect the jewels, and it conceals easily under my running short. I usually carry without one in the pipe and sometimes I down-load the glock to 8 rounds to keep down on the weight, but it works fine at full capacity too if you're worried you might miss.

I have the white smart carry and it's sweat stained gross now, but that's just cosmetic and the glock doesn't seem to mind the weeks of sweat-crystals built up on it so I declare it a good reliable system. If I had to start over I'd probably just get another smart carry in Navy blue this time.

I don't like their slogan. I personally prefer as much bounce as possible.

I carry an XDm Compact 3.8 .40 bi-tone with Trijicon night sights. Can't even tell I'm carrying with the holster I use. Look into the Crossbreed SuperTuck Deluxe. Its an IWB hybrid of leather and kydex. You'll be glad you did. Hands down the best holster I have ever owned, better yet, the best holster I've ever SEEN! Oh, and they make a horsehide version instead of cow leather for people like me who live in extremely hot climates (Tampa, FL).
