As the title says, do I need to appropriate some of my budget to acquire a chronograph? For precision rifle handloads I'm leaning towards the chronograph being as essential as a press. Can I hold off on that purchase or do I need it inmediately.
Definitely get one, they can tell you so much about the consistency of your loads and how any changes you make effect your loads. I recommend a MagnetoSpeed Sporter. It’s reasonably priced and much easier to use then trying to shoot through screens. Also handier if your shooting with others on a range so everyone doesn’t have to stop for you to adjust your chrono. I imagine that they sell them everywhere.
It depends on what your goals are and if you’re a slob or anal. Then there’s understanding of physics and mechanical inclination. They’re all important.
For short range shooting not so much. For long range shooting it is an essential tool. A 20 fps difference is 5" vertical at 1,000 (rule of thumb, varies with bullets BC and velocity). So you need something that is accurate with uniform velocity. 100 or 200 yards may be accurate with larger velocity spreads, but that load will fall apart as ranges increase.
