Considering making a Sav. Mk II chassis

One thing I've noticed is that the Savage Mk II doesn't have many stock options. There's a Manners, Boyd's, and a couple of other stocks. Most, if not all (except the Manners) are made of wood. The Boyd's Tacticool stock is made of a really soft wood. I'm considering making a full aluminum chassis for this rifle. I'm currently working on it in SolidWorks. It's definitely not finished, but am curious as to what you guys think. Also, I know I have to make a cut for the bolt handle and safety.

So far weighs 1.3 lbs.

Make it fit AICS side panels and it will sell like hotcakes. Been a few that have done it and I am considering ordering 2 sets of viperskins. One to build a chassis for savage LA, and one for my FVSR. I'm too slow to make em to sell though. Too many other things going on in life but with at least 2 months til good shooting weather I oughta be able to finish one or the other.

I'm considering doing the same thing with my CZ 452 Varmint. However I am thinking more of the XLR, RACS, or AX chassis with the tubular forend. How is the inlet holding the action? Is it angled or is it rounded to match the shape of the action? Looks great by the way!

The way I have it is rounded, but there are pillars in the cut out for the bosses that are about .005" deeper so when torquing it down, it should contact both the bosses and the cut for the action itself. Granted, that's under ideal conditions. It's simple enough though, since the action diameter is about 15/16 and Mcmaster sells 15/16 Ball end mills, so I can just take a couple passes instead of taking a lot more with a smaller ball end mill.

Also, I can't really do a tubular forend since all we have a Haas Mini mill, which is just a 3-axis.

I'll need to grab some AICS skins then. Also with the design, I could have the center section and the buttstock drileld and tapped for AICS skins, but offer different forends like the one I currently have or one that would accept the skins. I wonder if I could fit the tang for mounting an AR-15 grip underneath the skins if someone didn't want to use them.

Update:
Here's how it looks so far. Dimensions are far from final. I'm planning for the design to be modular, so if someone doesn't want to use the AICS skins, they don't have to.

i know its early in the stages but have you come even close to getting a cost per unit on this project i believe the other guy is right around 500

Not sure about pricing. I'll have to closer to design completion for calculating the cost. It'll probably be more expensive than S1erra1's Chassis. One of the reasons is that I'm trying to go for flexibility instead of Just using AICS skins.

Also, I won't be able to make these for at least a month. My friend won't be getting his Haas VMC until around next month.

Lefty version'll be later. I have to concentrate on just getting the chassis made at this point.

LoP can be adjusted from about 9 inches to 12 inches not including the back plate for the buttpad.

As a heads up, the design of the center section will probably be different because of the holes that need to be drilled and tapped for the AICS Skins aren't yet included.

what also would be nice is some sort of thingie in the back that allows you to put on an AR butt stock to give a position and all the rest of those AR fancy schmancy stocks and grips.

if you need some field testers, i can pick up jello on the way over

I'm working on incorporating an AR Grip "block" that you'd be able to attach if you didn't want to use AICS skins. An adapter block for attaching an AR buffer tube shouldn't be all that hard.

that's cool though that you will have access to the right tools in a little while.

buffer tube & AR grip adapter opens up a whole new set of options when these things are made.

First post, so please forgive me if I'm making a faux pas. I'm definitely interested in an Aluminum or synthetic stock for the Savage MKII (with aluminum bedding pillars if synthetic). The only options I've found are all wood, which seems weather and torque sensitive.

Solidworks is great software for someone with the means to manufacture, but if you're looking for a way to get an initial run and don't have the machines yourself, you might look at emachineshop.com. They are expensive for one-off stuff, but if we could get a group together for a small run it might make costs manageable and the group could provide input for any design revisions for phase II.

I've thought of trying this myself, actually, but Frapiscide's design skills look far better than mine. The only thing I might suggest would be replacing a custom buttstock with the means to accept a standard AR-15 CAR buffer tube. I think the design already implies use of an AR-15 pistol grip. This would really make the stock modular and customizable to fit an individual shooter. I recently upgraded my savage 10FP to a McRee Precision stock that has those features and wonder why I ever bothered with anything else. I now wish I had the same for my .22 to use as a trainer.

I'm also interested; I've got a MKII TR and have already decided I want to ditch the boyd's stock and either go with a Manners, or sell the whole gun and get a CZ 455 PT. I'll have to wait a bit longer to decide now...

I have (somewhat) of a design for the main mid section drawn up it SolidWorks, only problem is I don't have a free mill to actually do any work on it now. If the mill at work ever gets free I will see what I can get done!
