If it's an original Contender, there is a little butterfly looking piece in the action that can cause problems (sorry, it's been so long I've forgotten the nomenclature).

Also, if your rounds are a little too long or the shoulder isn't set back enough you'll have the same problem. Never seen it happen with .30/30, but certain cases will thicken in the neck and cause difficult chambering.

As above. It's a headspace/shoulder issue. Be careful with it...
I kept shooting a 309 JDJ that was doing that and on the 3rd or 4th shot the Contender literally OPENED, expelling the primer at my shooting glasses right lens @ a horrific rate of speed. Had I been bare eyed I would have been in trouble. BR

maybe headspace....get a gauge and check it. if it's not headspace, try factory ammo to see if problem is the same....if it is, send it back to Thompson and they'll fix you up quick.....great CS there
