I currently have a Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06. Supposedly the same action is used for magnum calibers as well.

I want to build that rifle into a long range gun and I'd like to swap barrels like the Savage guns. I'll be putting it in a chassis.

I found someone selling Howa 1500 magnum faced bolts on Ebay for a very reasonable price. I'm wanting to build out a 7mmRem Mag or some other magnum 7mm.

Can I just buy the magnum bolt and put in a prefit barrel? Headspace and all that will be set with go/nogo gauges and the barrel nut.

Then if I want a different caliber I could just order a new barrel.

At one point I was going to convert it to a 280AI, but if I can get a magnum bolt then I'd rather build on it to start with. Just wondering if it's more involved than just putting a magnum bolt in and a prefit barrel.

I like the 7SS and maybe the 7 PRC when it gets released. Not 100% on 7RemMag, but considering it for the readily available brass.

i wouldn't spend that money on a $500 gun. if you could even get just a bolt without buying a whole new donor rifle

it's not the correct platform to build on for a long range target gun. the available chassis are meh at best. prefit barrels annoying. options just arent there.
