Hello,
To settle a debt I was given a Remington long action rifle with a prone stock in .284. The barrel is a heavy long diameter 1.25 at the action and 1.00 at the Vais muzzlebrake, its 29 inches, heavily fluted and with its NightForce 8 x 32 scope weighs over 18+ pounds. I also got Lapua .308 brass formed for, and a match reamer for, a 6mm IHMSA cartridge. This case is 1.87 long, 35 degree shoulder. 270 neck and holds 47.5 gr. of water. Its just slightly larger then the standard 6.5 x 47 Lapua. Due to the acrimonious situation involved, no information was exchanged.

I've been introduced to shooting the Raton sporting rifle match. There is now way I would be carrying this heavyweight around on that course. My 16 pound 6.5 x 284 gave me hip pain that lasted three days. Since you have to hit the targets at Raton, not kill them, I think this small case might be fine for that course. With the size of this cartridge do you think it would work well in that long action Remington rifle? Since I have a single shot rifle I have used on this course, making a rifle with a 6 or ten shot magazine is quite appealing. Which bottom metal including magazine would you recommend to be used if I convert this rifle? I assume such a case would propel a Berger 105 gr. hybrid around 3,200 fps. What barrel length and diameter might you suggest so that the finished rifle weighs a lot less than 18 pounds?

Thank you for your attention in this matter,

I'd sell the rifle and get money towards a short action. It will save you lots of head aches. You'll run into feeding issues and having to have spacers in your mags, etc. With that cartridge though, 24-26" would be fine and in a Remington varmint contour should only weigh in around 10-14lbs depending on your stock/chassis. The 105 hybrids are about as good as it gets for the 6mm's. 3200 should be achievable just double check what your clubs speed limit is, sometimes it's 31-3150.
