Hello, I am a new member who is interested in getting into 1000 yard shooting. I have recently purchased a cooper 22 varminter in .308 topped with a leupold custom shop vxII 6-18x40 w M1 turrets is this an acceptable to outfit to start with or am I fooling myself? Thanks

I have a Cooper 22 in 6mm Remington that I have used in F-class shoots and it has done quite well. There are only two reasons it is not my regular competition rifle.
1. The stock is not really well suited for prone position shooting.
2. The twist is 1:10 which is a little too slow for the bullets I would like to use.
Other than that, very capable rifle, even to 1000 yards.

Make sure that you stay away from 168Gr for those distances. Instead go with about 175Gr.

Scope has more then enough magnification. I would be wondering if it has enough internal adjustment actually.

This depends on the type of 1000yd shooting you are planning to do. For plinking steel or tactical matches it should be fine. For F-class or 1000yd bench rest you would probably want at least a 32x. Just my personal opinion. Others may disagree.

A 10 twist would be fast for a .308, but for a 6mm, it's only a moderate twist. The heavier 6mm bullets that are best suited for long range (105s to 115s) are longer in relation to their diameter than the heavy 30 caliber bullets. Long bullets need to be spun very fast to stabalize. I can just barely stabilize 95gr Berger VLDs which is what I shoot for long range with this rifle.
As far as Cooper's customer support "sucking", are you speaking from personal experience or just repeating what you have heard? I personally have had no problem with it, but then again, I haven't needed much.

+1 on the adjustment. The VXII 6-18x40 only has 56 moa up/down (so 28 up). With a 308 175 SMK at +/- 2600 fps you would have about 39 moa drop. So you would need a 20 MOA base to get to 1000 yds (if my math is correct).
If you are really going to focus on the 1000 yd line then get a scope with 80+ moa adjustment or look for a base that can give the extra up... Plus you might want to look for a turret click/reticle combo that matches (like mil/mil or moa/moa) - this made my life easier when I started going o 1K.
