Making a new ghillie, and I am looking for what to put on the front.

Is Cordura good?

What else have you guys used?

What colors can you get it it? Id like od green, tan, coyote brown or something along those lines.

Ill probably use shoo goo or e600 (i think e600 i better, what do you think?) to tack it down and sew it on.

Thanks
Shay

Re: Cordura or what?

I like to use 1000d with a light padding behind it and sew it on with cross stitches to hold it down. I like to stay away from adhesives if I can. I really dislike shoe goo cause it has a horible smell to it, even when its dry.

I know allot of older designs called for canvas but I find the 1000d to be more durable. You can get it in almost any color you want and almost any camo. Its best if you buy it in big rolls cause its cheaper.

You can always use chain mesh, that way it will be arrow proof in those areas

Ghillie Zen- I tried a duffel bag on the front of one, but it didnt turn out how I liked it.

I may go with the 1000d. I just need to know how much per suit.

Re: Cordura or what?

1000d is good with a little closed cell foam behind it. not to big as it doesnt breath too good . I went a little further on mine when I had a good sewing machine. I bought some 1" milspec webbing and sewed some strips vertically , spaced about 3-4 " apart

Re: Cordura or what?

for a full suit, you should need just under 1 full yard. layout all your patterns ahead of time on the fabric so that you get the most usage out of the yard.

make sure the cordura is dwr. you're going to hear a lot of guys tell you to go with 1000d, but the reality is that it's overkill in most apps. most guys can get away with 500d on the forearms, chest and upper thigh. the only spots that really needs 1000d are the knees and shins.

course, there's always going to be the exception that claims that nothing but 1000d will do and that may very well be the case for them, but most will never need that level of durability on the upper body.

1000d cordura is good shit, there's no doubt, but typically, mil. style ghillies are bdu-based and even with 500d, the base will most likely wear out long before the 500d will.

we do produce the tc mamba suits with 1000d skids, but thats because we know the other materials used with it will be able to withstand the same level of abuse. in most cases, the mamba will last a guy his whole career.

also, keep in mind that treated cordura (dwr) does not adhere well with shoe goo. it has to be sewn down for best results.

Re: Cordura or what?

I may go witht he 1000d, if im gonna do it, I might as use the best. Ill get 2 yards so Ill have extra.

Also, I noticed your in MI Zac, where are ya? Maybe we can meet up some time.

Re: Cordura or what?

i have been getting 1000d for all my stuff lately because i have found it relatively cheap. $7 for 1yd x 60"
if you want to make it inexpensive...dont switch it between 500d on the body and 1000d on the knees. use one or the other.
I like to use the color that my basic suit is. i see guys all the time useing OD green on a desert or fall color suit, and that just doesnt make any sense to me.
if your suit is woodland camo, sure, go for OD. if your suit is 3 color desert go with 3 color desert codura.
