Couple 6x47L questions

Couple questions on this...inputs appreciated, especially if assumptions are incorrect . If I missed a big thread on this, apologies, I'd take a link. Have build 300wm, 7RM 6.5PRC.

-ballistics to 1k are slightly better than 6.5x47L (105s vs 130s?) With less recoil, less powder, longer bbl life
-Same brass, availability is good, 100pc lapua should last me the life of a bbl
-small rifle primers (a concern in cold or no?)
-can be finicky but the research designed by Cortina solves that if you can find it
-accuracy and speeds seem really nice
-feeds reliably

I initially started out wanting to build a 6.5x47L for the brass...then came the 6x47 idea...this will be a target rifle, just for fun.

Is 26"as short as you'd go? shorter if suppressed?
Recommended powder for temp stability? What if temp stable not a factor?
DTAC, bergers?

You can make all the same assumptions about the X47 siblings as you can about both Creedmoors. Theyre a minor tweak on the parent case, and involve similarly minor tradeoffs. Small primers aren't an issue. Barrel
length can be whatever you want it to be, prioritize as you want. Having built some 6x47’s for myself and customers, its a fine cartridge. Day in day out I prefer the 6.5x47, as it seems just a smidge more forgiving than the 6. Make no mistake though, choosing one over the other is hair splitting.

One thing to watch out for on the 6x47L is internet load data. Very often its wildly over pressure.

I should have worded that a bit better on length..how to find shortest length that allows full burn assuming say H4350?

We’re talking about a pretty small case, so it doesn't take much. Choose any barrel length you like, you’ll lose 25-30 fps per inch. My current 6.5x47 has a 16.5 inch barrel. I prioritized short and light, and 100 suppressed.

Its hard to fuck up a 6.5x47. Its like the BR family of cases. Put powder in, seat bullet, and expect small groups. The 6 takes slightly more care, despite having less recoil. Not hard to find lots of grumbling undertones on accuracy with the 6 on the web. Some blamed that on early throat dimensions.

My 6x47Lap is easily my most accurate rifle, with 0 time spent working up a load. Feeds like butter, brass lasts forever - its just easy. 27” barrel here btw.

Whats it like? 105s and 4350?

Have heard it's best to find the E. Cortina reamer print? Or is that old data? Have seen conflicting data on best chamber specs to avoid a the "finicky" 6x47 compkaints

all things being equal, you will get better barrel life almost 100% of the time in a 6.5 over a 6

I have a ton of experience with both 6 and 6.5.

the 6.5 is as easy to load for as the 6br. every load I put in shoots 1/2. im on my 3rd barrel on this cal. my son shoots it for NRL hunter. ive shot it a couple seasons in the RTC. 130's at 2875 and around 3500 rounds i pull barrel. 24" barrel wouldnt go longer...the node you want is the 140's at 2760

the 6 x 47 was not as easy but once a node was found I didnt change it for over 6 barrels. Mostly ive shot 22" barels on my 6 but last few have been 26 and 105's going 3050. ive loaded it mostly hot and never lasted past 2400 rounds. my 22" barrels the node i liked best was 105's at 2870


if I had to start over again with one cal it would be the 6,5 x 47

108eldms and H4350.

Tbh I have no idea what specific reamer my smith used.

CURIOUS what a mild load will do for barrel life? Im guessing you never went over 3k?
and velocity?

Barrel #1 is a Broughton and has 900ish rounds on it. I base that on the 5 pound jug of powder that I used plus a little more.

Barrel #2 is a Hawk Hill and has 350 rounds shot. I haven't seen anything change dramatically in either. 2790 with 37.5 grains of RL16 behind the 115. The range I have access to is 1000 yards and it gets there with 7.5 mils of elevation at 6900 DA.

For the last couple years I have been shooting a lot more 223 and 223AI, so the 6X47L spends lot of time in the safe.

Thanks for that reply. The 6.5x47 is on the list as well, to replace my elk rifle. I have a 7RM that's shooting 180 bergers. It's a 7lb rifle unloaded and it's not a great time to shoot. I definitely shot my 6.5 PRC much better in the woods, but it was also a 15lb rifle. I like the 7RM for big game, but it's not the tack driver that the 6 and 6.5mm's. I built it mainly for ease of finding ammo in any small town gas station on a hunt if I lost a bag or left ammo at home

There has been enough big game dropped with 6.5s now, I'm not hesitant to take one in the woods, I haven't needed to shoot past 500 on an elk yet.

the plan for a 6x47L was mainly for a target rifle, some local comps just to stay shooting all year. It would be nice to rechamber my tikka 7RM in 6.5x47 and have it throated for 127 LRX for elk then build that target rifle in 6x47 throated for 105 DTACs or Berger hybrids...share primers, powder and the same parent brass for both. Maybe I just stick with 6.5x47 for both, still have some reading to do, I'm just starting to read up and formulate the plan and appreciate the insight, somethings to think about.
