What kind of scope would you throw on an AR to use for Coyotes? I'm thinking of building a 243 WSSM and would like to have a scope that could get me out there. Minimal magnification on the bottom end would be nice for when they sneak in close.

The Nightforce NX8 1-8 would probably be perfect, but I don't want to spend that much. Anything similar out there or any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Maybe a Leupold VR-X Patrol 3-9x40 with the FireDot reticle?

This is what's on my dedicated coyote AR. Midway has them on sale now for $389.99: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1009581380

I also like the 3-9x Trijicons for a hunting AR.

EDIT: I also use an offset Burris Fastfire for shots on critters that pop out in close. I don't like an LPVO for this application because of the diminished exit pupil in low light. Above 4-5x they can get pretty dark as light diminishes. I have a half dozen other ARs with LPVOs on them...I don't use them for Coyote.

I have a Gen 1 Viper PST 2.5-10 on my 6.5 Grendel... being able to dial down to 2.5 and scan really helps when i'm calling them in.... generally i'm hunting over a rabbit stuffed animal (loved on by a real rabbit) and work a distress call. locally i'm usually hunting from a barn loft or stacked hay (my local meat dealer has invasions from time to time)

What's the typical range you usually shoot?

IMO the best magnification for dedicated hunting scope is 2-10 or 2-12, I don't feel that a true 1x is necessary for hunting and 10-12 on the top end is good most of the time.

A 3-15 would be be preferable if most shooting is 150 yards or more, but you lose the huge FOV up close you get with 1-2x.

CameraLandNY has the Bushnell LRTSi 3-12x44 on sale for $749. Call Doug and see if he has any open boxes, and you may be able to get one cheaper. I bought one to upgrade my coyote rifle last month. Have spent most of my spare time deer hunting this fall/winter, but come January 19th I’ll be getting after the coyotes...

I’ve got the Trijicon 1-8 on my AR. Plenty of magnification for coyotes out to 4-500, and really nice glass. Reticle is pretty large at 8x, but it works just fine.

+1 on the 3-12 LRTSi, very light, reliable tracking, and glass well above the price point. Especially for what cameralandny is selling them for. In my experience, the 3-15 gen 2 pst is slightly cloudy in comparison to the LRTSi

Burris Fullfield E1 Illuminated Ballistaplex 3-9x40 is what I use. The reticle matches a 68 grain Hornady out of a 16” barrel perfectly out to 500 yards. I use a red dot on the 45 for close ups.

Another good recommendation. The non-illuminated E1 is what I call a "bright, light and tight" reasonably priced hunting scope...for the $150 they can be had it's a great budget option with a nice etched reticle. I have a non-illuminated 30mm tube E1 on a 16" 6.5 Grendel AR upper used for hunting deer. I've been tempted by that illuminated version a few times.

I love mine, illumination works perfect. They seem to be pretty tuff little scopes as well.

I have a gen 1 PST 2.5-10 on mine. I really like it.

I've just scored Vortex HD LH 2-10x40 G4 that should work well on my 6x45 AR. I've used the HD LH 1.5-8x32 on my foot long Grendel this hunting season with great results.
