Got out this morning and did a little calling, got three to come in, I was by myself and was only able to get one down, but I was damn happy to see those three come running in this morning!

I used to help my stepdad run a trap line up in the Black Hills in South Dakota and have been wanting to get into predator hunting down here. Started with a shitty electric call, got tired of that thing skwawking and not having the best results, got a mouth call from Primos and played around with that until I could make it sound like the Randy Anderson videos

It served me well this mornin!

About 185 yards with the 6.5 Creedmoor, it dispatched him nicely and didn't tear up the fur too bad. Got him skinned out and on the stretcher, going to drop it off at the taxidermist and have it tanned since its my first Nevada kill.

Thanks guys! Yea I was stoked when I saw those three dogs come out of the tree line!

I am reloading for the Creedmoor, I am running 140 Grain AMAX with 41.6 grains of H4350, OAL 2.82". I have hunted with the AMAX this year I know there is alot of back and forth on that one, but I took two deer, a spike bull elk, and a coyote with them and none of the Critters had to be tracked. I think that 650 yards was pushing the limits on the elk, but it seems to be a very capable round.

My shooting partners have switched to the 139 grain Scenars as they have been grouping better in their rifles, the AMAX seems to do alright for me, the rifle and the ammo is still more accurate than I am at this point, plus I have about 4000 rounds of AMAX in the reloading room, so I reckon I will run them for a bit!

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like your shooting damn near the same load everyone else is on here. Give or take the buller, they sounds like a great round.

If I do go with a 6.5mm bullet I can't decide between the 6.5 x 47 or the Creedmoor. Any specific reason you went with the Creedmoor?

I went with the Creedmoor because I had seen the results some of my shooting partners were getting with theirs and I could readily access loading information, our rifles were all chambered on the same lathe and head-spaced damn near identical, if one of our rifles goes down we can literally in most cases exchange bolts and the rifles will still run.

I have heard people argue tooth and nail about which one is better, truth be told, I do not feel strongly one way or another between the two, but I have been very happy with the Creedmoor. Good luck to you sir and I am sure that no matter which way you go you will be happy and have a great shooting rifle.

I haven't been into the coyote hunting/trapping game for a great long while. I do have one of the wooden stretchers, this one though, I took in "wet" to the taxidermist to have them stretch, flesh, and tan it.

I am going to keep this one as it is my first kill in Nevada. If I get more serious about it I am going to have to figure out a way to deal with the hides without pissing off the wife! If I started getting into a massive assembly line of furs in my garage, she would have me by the nuts!

I remember growing up and we had a pile of coyote carcasses out in a field next to the house and we would burn them with diesel from time to time when the pile got too big

My mom put up with a lot more than my wife will, she doesn't want me dragging home "dead animals" I am going to have to smuggle the finished coyote hide into the reloading room without her knowledge!

Re: Coyote calling in Southern Nevada

Lucky. My parents moved to Vegas a couple years ago and my dad and I have gone out a few times trying to call them in and haven't ever got anything to come (besides an owl). Tried day and night in areas where we've heard them howling/yipping to no avail.

I remember as a kid we'd call in packs of 3-5 regularly in NW Kansas, but have had no such luck here.

I have called in my share of owls too

I was out one time with a couple other guys and we were running an electric call, I had the speaker set up in a Joshua tree about 30 yards in front of us and we were up on a ridge line. I had just shifted my position and I swore I saw the tree bend a little (kind of like a fishing pole getting a bite) but I convinced myself it was an optical illusion cause I had just shifted positions. When we got ready to leave my buddy said, hey did you see that owl? I said no, and he shined his red tinted spotlight up in the tree and there was a giant owl perched up there eyeballing my speaker....looking for this eternally dying rabbit!

Good luck out there, I too had to put in a bunch of time running calls to no avail before I got these three to come in.
